Atlantic City, NJ - Ever since former WBO Super Bantamweight champ, Ponce de Leon captured the title back in 2005, many boxing fans and pundits wondered when he would lose the title. Although known as a knockout artist, the Mexican champion had enough holes in his attack to be viewed as a shaky champion with that view manifesting from the one sided loss to current WBA champ Celestino Caballero. But de Leon would go on to defend his title 7 times including impressive victories against current WBO Bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa and young hot contender, Ray "Boom Boom" Bautista. Unlike Bautista, the hungry challenger from Puerto Rico would be up to the task of matching fire with fire against de Leon to spring the upset that we all thought would happen a little sooner. Juan Manuel Lopez 22(20 KO)-0 would blitz the champion with devastating power punches to end the fight at the 2:25 mark of the first round. De Leon 34(30 KO) -2 would try to get up from the onslaught after the second knockdown, but the combination of the first big right to the chin and the last salvo against the ropes would be too much for the champion to recover from. The referee rightly stopped the fight and saved de Leon from further punishment.

Hometown favorite Carl "The Cobra" Froch, 22-0-0 [18KO's] gave his fans something to cheer about Saturday night, blowing late replacement Albert Rybacki away inside four rounds on the Nottingham Arena card. Froch's mooted opponent Dennis Inkin withdrew from the fight at late notice, and with it more than likely sacrificed his high ranking, apparently unwilling to fight. The WBC said the fight would still go ahead as a WBC title eliminator, and Rybacki duly stepped in at the last minute, after another replacement, American Rubin Williams failed to get a Visa in time.

On Saturay, May 3, at the famed Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, world-ranked junior welterweight Norio Kimura retained the Japanese national title with a fifth round technical knockout of challenger Daigoro Yamamoto. It was Kimura's 17th straight win since losing the Japanese lightweight title to Takahiro Shimada in 2002. Former professional boxer Gino Gelormino, 47, died in a tragic accident today. He fell 60 feet to his death while working on New York's Triborough Bridge. He was employed as an iron worker by Skanska Koch, Inc. and was a member of Local 361. Gino, a native of Levittown, Long Island, was a former New York Golden Gloves champion. He turned professional in 1981. Nicknamed "Young Willie Pep", he was a slick, fast boxer-puncher who rose in the super featherweight ranks.

Former Olympian Vicente Escobedo and comebacking Bronx, New York jumior welterweight Jeffrey Resto each won 10-round dcisions during the May 2 edition of Solo Boxeo Tecate. The fights were televised from the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy, with David Beckham and Landon Donovan, and of CD (Club Deportivo) Chivas USA.
