Mayweather Vs. De La Hoya Result
The 30 years old unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. (38-0-0 24KOs) became the WBC Super Welterweight Champion of the world last saturday by beating 34 years old Oscar De La Hoya (38-5-0 30KOs) by split decision at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas in front of 16 000 spectators.

Master of arrogance, Mayweather inspired by his uncle Roger made his entrance dressed in Mexico's colors, De La Hoya's country of origin.

The excitment was tangible that night as the fight began, De La Hoya pressured and imposed his pace going forward, while Mayweather was patiently waiting for opportunities to counter. De La Hoya found a way to pressure Mayweather against the ropes with his jab, and then started to land body shots in combinations.

He repeated this strategy at various times during the first half of the fight. De La Hoya dictating the first half of the fight used a lot of energy and though he seemed to be effective, Mayweather and punch stats are confirming that it wasnt.

"He tried to hit me a lot, but his shots didnt landed. I saw the shots coming, and stayed on the outside, a real masterpiece..." Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather

43% of the 481 shots thrown landed

De La Hoya

21% of the 587 shots thrown landed

De La Hoya looked less effective and energized in teh second half of the fight, still sticking to the same game plan of pressuring and landing body shots combinations. Mayweather kept picking his shots and displaying his superb skills. De La Hoya kept geting countered and looked less animated. Mayweather solidified his grip on a decision in the second half.

"I felt i won the fight. My shots were better and more powerful. You need to beat the champion decisevely. Being the belt holder, i tried to stop Mayweather before the last bell." De La Hoya

After the fight, Mayweather announced his retirement, pretexting he wants to take care of his childrens and that he has nothing more to prove in the sport of boxing. De La Hoya might also retired, if there isnt a rematch.
