TTR TO RECOGNIZE ROSARIO-CHARLO AND LOMACHENKO-LOPEZ WINNERS AS LINEAL CHAMPIONS
Pictured: Jeison Rosario

TTR will be recognizing the winners of the September 26 Jeison Rosario-Jermell Charlo and October 17 Vasiliy Lomachenko-Teofimo Lopez bouts as the lineal world champions of the junior middleweight and lightweight divisions respectively. In our current rankings, Rosario and Charlo are ranked #1 and #2 at 154 while Lomachenko, TTR's #1 ranked fighter Pound-For-Pound, and Lopez are ranked #1 and #2 at 135. However, while that would seem to be the basis for the decision to fill the lineal vacancies with the winners of those aforementioned bouts, it is not!

Being that I'm the only TTR member participating in the rankings of those divisions at this time, I didn't think it was appropriate for us to use my opinion alone. Thus, as in the past, even when we had more members involved, we will be recognizing "consensus" #1s and #2s as the rightful contenders for those titles.

In the case of Lomachenko-Lopez, it was a no-brainer! Lomachenko is already recognized as the champion by The Ring and is ranked #1 by TTR, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB), ESPN, and BoxRec while Lopez is ranked as the #1 contender for The Ring's title and is ranked #2 by TTR, the TBRB, ESPN, and BoxRec.

Rosario-Charlo was a little more complicated and required "mathematically" confirming that they are the consensus Top 2. Using the Top Tens of TTR, the TBRB, The Ring, ESPN, and BoxRec, I assigned 10 points for a #1 ranking, 9 points for a #2, down to 1 point for a #10 ranking. Charlo, with three #1 rankings (The Ring, ESPN, BoxRec), one #2 (TTR), and one #4 (TBRB), finished as the overall #1 with 46 points. Rosario, with 2 #1s (TTR, TBRB), 2 #2s (The Ring, ESPN), and 1 #7 (BoxRec) had 42 points, good for the #2 position. Jarrett Hurd (2 #3s- TTR, TBRB; 2 #4s- The Ring, ESPN; and 1 #6- BoxRec) finished #3 with 35 points. Erislandy Lara (1 #2- BoxRec; 1 #4- TTR; 2 #5s- The Ring, ESPN; and #1 #6- TBRB) and Julian Williams (1 #2- TBRB; 2 #3s- The Ring, ESPN; 1 #6- TTR; and 1 #8- BoxRec) each totaled 33 points and finished tied for the #4 spot.

Other junior middleweights earning points were Brian Carlos Castano (30), Michel Soro (16), Tony Harrison (15), Kell Brook (9), Patrick Teixeira (6), Erickson Lubin (3), Liam Smith (3), Tim Tszyu (2), Sebastian Fundora (1), and Jack Culcay (1).

(Note: the above totals were revised on 8/27 to reflect Fundora's 8/22 KO-6 win over Nathaniel Gallimore which, on 8/25, unexpectedly resulted in Fundora replacing Lubin as the TBRB's #10 ranked contender and Tszyu's 8/26 TKO-8 win over then BoxRec #6 ranked Jeff Horn which resulted in many changes in BoxRec's computerized rankings. It should be noted that Charlo's and Rosario's totals were not affected by any of the changes.)

Hopefully, nothing will happen to postpone either of these title fights and neither will result in a draw, a No Contest, or a No Decision. Let there be winners to join Tyson Fury, Artur Beterbiev, Canelo Alvarez, Guillermo Rigondeaux, and Juan Jose Estrada as reigning lineal world champions as recognized by TTR.
