During the two-day period of Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17, Satoshi Shimizu successfully defended the OPBF featherweight title but previously undefeated Japanese super lightweight champion Koki Inoue was upset by Daishi Nagata in Tokyo, lightweight contender Felix Verdejo and unbeaten heavyweight prospect Jared "The Real Big Baby" Anderson scored first round knockout wins in Las Vegas, and, in Florida, Warsaw, Poland cruiserweight prospect Michal Olas made his debut in the United States a winning one. In addition, on The Bubble card, featherweight Martino Jules remained undefeated as did welterweight prospect Ivan Franco on the Florida promotion.

- Verdejo-Madera was the main event on the Top Rank-promoted, ESPN-televised card at The Bubble at the MGM Grand. It had been elevated to main event status after the Miguel Marriaga-Mark John Yap match was scratched. Yap weighed in 8.7 pounds over the contractually agreed upon weight limit of 128 causing the Nevada State Athletic Commission to cancel the bout.
- Verdejo unleashed a fusillade of punches, dropping the previously unbeaten Madera to the canvas.
