For the second time, this week, the staff and the members of The13thround.com mourn the passing of a young boxer who died from injuries suffered in the ring. 23-year-old Hugo Alfredo "Dinamita" Santillan of Villa Constitucion, Santa Fe, Argentina passed away yesterday after fighting a 10-round, split decision draw with defending WBC Latino Silver lightweight champion Eduardo Javier Abreu on July 20.

Santillan collapsed in the ring while awaiting the result of the bout. He was rushed to the San Felipe Hospital in San Nicolas, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the city in which the bout was held, where he underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on his brain. He had also sustained extensive kidney damage and died from cardiac arrest without ever regaining consciousness.

Santillan turned pro in 2015 and compiled a record of 19 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws. He won eight of his bouts by knockout and was stopped twice. In his bout previous to the one with the 30-year-old Uruguayan Abreu, Santillan had lost a one-sided, ten-round, unanimous decision on June 15 to Artem Harutyunyan In Hamburg, Germany. As a result, he had been suspended by the German commission, the Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer, until July 30 because he had taken too many blows to his head. It is not clear why he was permitted to fight 10 days before that suspension expired.
