XFL teams to pick 71 players each in first draft

XFL teams will select 71 players apiece next week in the league's inaugural draft, according to a structure the league announced Monday.

The two-day event will take place Oct. 15-16. It will open with the league assigning one quarterback to each of its eight teams, followed by a snake-style draft that commissioner Oliver Luck said will "maximize parity and equity between the teams." Each selection will be publicized through XFL.com, as well as the league's Twitter (@XFL2020) and Instagram (@XFL) accounts.

"We spent a lot of time on this and I think we have a pretty good set-up," Luck told ESPN.

Approximately 1,000 players opted into the XFL draft pool by accepting the commissioner's invitations and passing a background check. After the initial quarterback assignments, the remaining players will be subject to a five-phase draft divided roughly by position groups: skill positions, offensive line, defensive front seven and defensive backs. The final phase will include players at all positions.

The XFL administered a blind lottery to determine draft order. The Los Angeles Wildcats won and chose the first pick of the offensive line phase.

The D.C. Defenders will have the first pick of the skill-position phase.

Most draft-eligible players either played in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football and/or were released this summer from NFL training camps.

According to Luck, there will be a supplemental draft at the end of November for players who were ineligible to be drafted in October, either because they were on NFL rosters at the time or because they were a part of college programs. The XFL is not subject to the NFL's college eligibility rules and is open to signing players who are less than three years removed from high school.

Drafted players will be allowed to accept an NFL offer up until the start of XFL minicamps in December. Training camps will begin in January and the first games will be Feb. 8, 2020.

Talk going around that Krapernick could sign a big money contract. Would give the upstart league an instant sideshow attraction. Krap been out for 3 years now and cries still go out as soon as any starting QB goes down.

Will the second-biggest team in the league get Tebow automatically, so we can have an instant "feud"?

The point of this league isn't to sign players like Kap, Strayhawk.

I hope it fails fantastically. Fuck the XFL

There are no big money contracts. This was from June and verified 7 days ago.

XFL Player Salary Structure

The XFL is steadily taking shape with a steady flow of coaching additions, regional showcases, and infrastructure.

To help assure league stability and future growth, costs are critical for the league to survive. Similar to the Alliance of American Football, salaries will be kept under strict limits.

Although spending caps have yet to be finalized, the league is expected to have four salary levels. Each “tier” has different player quotas based on a planned 45 man roster.

1- Similar to the NFL’s “franchise” designation, a minimum $250,000 salary will be exclusively assigned to one player. This tier will likely be used for the quarterback. It could go as high as $600,000.

2- Three players will be assigned this pay level with a range of $150,000 to $175,000.

3- This level allows the largest contingent with 23 players. The salary will fall between $70,000 and $100,000.

4- The lowest pay will be allotted to 18 players. Their salary will be at least $50,000, with the potential to reach $70,000. It may not seem like much, but consider college athletes who are less than three years removed from high school and ineligible for the NFL. Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence may find this a tempting opportunity. Others may also be enticed by endorsement deals available in the XFL which are forbidden by the NCAA.

Coaches will be making $ 500,000

Krap would bring in viewers. McMahn might pony up the money to get him signed. The USFL was sposed to be on a tight payroll budget but the signed guys like Kelly, Young n Walker. Plus those who want to see him pkay football again will be happy.

Coaches make 500k, peak franchise player 600k and average player salary under 100k. Lol. Sounds about right. The Ol' Boy Football League.
