Somebody should tell the WBO that Manny Pacquiao has retired and that Omar Narvaez, Zolani Tete, and Oleydong Sithsamerchai are all fighting at 118.
Re: Canelo Now WBO's #1 Contender at 154
I wonder who they lobbied to get that spot. There are definately interests at work to try to legitimize Canelo fighting Liam smith. I'm curious to see if Canelo actually drops down to 154 or if the wbo will bend their rules for Canelo at 155.................

I'm sure they will. Integrity is hard to come by in this sport.gotiye wrote:I wonder who they lobbied to get that spot. It depends if they're willing to grant him some type of exemption to get the rub from the event...................dwightmac83 wrote:so he may go down to 54 which I may a thread about a few weeks ago

If he challenges for Smith's title, it has to be at 154. If he and Smith fight for a vacant WBO steppingstone middleweight title, it could be at 155. The two "major" WBO steppingstone titles at 160, the Inter-Continental and International championships, are not currently vacant but a quick edict could change that.

I thought he needed two fights to get acclimated to 160 for GGG? This shit is too funny.

In the ideal boxing world Canelo would be fighting GGG, and guys like Liam Smith and Willie Monroe would be fighting each other.

I'm assuming the wbo wants Canelo to win so they get their cut of his purse via their sanctioning fee. They're a business too. The fee they take from Canelo's purse will be better than the one they get from Liam smith...................Tocsin wrote:In the ideal boxing world Canelo would be fighting GGG, and guys like Liam Smith and Willie Monroe would be fighting each other.

I hope Canelo does fight Smith at 154 and wins. That should be enough for the lineal middleweight title to be considered vacant. Then Golovkin can beat Jacobs in a 1v2 bout and finally be what he deserves to be.
Re: Canelo Now WBO's #1 Contender at 154
Liam should demand 153. Oh and not move a freakin centimetre on venue.

I hope Liam doesn't roll over and makes them fight on an even playing field or try to make Canelo come to the uk..................RASTA666 wrote:Liam should demand 153. Oh and not move a freakin centimetre on venue.

Smith may have a "title" but he doesn't belong in the ring with Alvarez. Look at his record:

It will be almost criminal if Smith is Alvarez' next opponent.

Wouldn't make sense to have the Sept. ppv anywhere but LV. Remember why the date is has the value it does. Liam will be fighting in LV. I do hope it's at 154 so I can laugh at Yellow Canelo's bullshit when asked about facing the other champions in the division.

Same can be said of Eubank's at 160. Both fights are what they are. Triple's age makes his selection even more important imo.WillieB59 wrote:Smith may have a "title" but he doesn't belong in the ring with Alvarez. Look at his record:

Is John Thompson Smith's best opponent?
Re: Canelo Now WBO's #1 Contender at 154
Canelo can make 154 if he wants to. He's spoiled when it comes to that. I would like to see him fight the either one of the charlos or Andrade..................NoPropaganda 253 wrote:Wouldn't make sense to have the Sept. ppv anywhere but LV. He's the only one I recognize mainly because of his fight on showtime and boxino. I don't know much about his other opponents to draw an opinion of them...................Tocsin wrote:Is John Thompson Smith's best opponent?

That didn't take to long. How do these people look at themselves in the morning?
I can hardly wait for the fine print.

Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) will look to win his third title in the junior middleweight division when he challenges undefeated heavy-hitter Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) for the WBO junior middleweight world championship on Saturday, September 17. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Information regarding venue and tickets will be announced shortly.
Canelo Alvarez: “I am very pleased to announce my next fight against Liam Smith, a tremendous fighter with real knockout power, and the WBO junior middleweight world title owner. I have no doubt that this fight will be give and take, which will fill the expectations of the fans, and I will work with all the enthusiasm as I always do to get the upper hand on 17 September.”
Liam Smith: “I am delighted to get the opportunity to defend my world title against the biggest name in world boxing and to headline in the U.S. which is a dream I have had since I started in the sport of boxing. This fight allows me to make my name in the U.S. and show just how good I am and this is the big stage that will enable me to do that…I am confident of winning this fight and returning to the great city of Liverpool with my belt still around my waist.”
Oscar De La Hoya: “This fight will be a slugfest between two heavy hitters, and I have little doubt that it will end with a 10-count. Canelo is the biggest star in our sport today, and with a victory on September 17, at the age of just 26 he can add yet another chapter to his already-incredible career.”
Frank Warren: “Liam grabbed the opportunity to defend his WBO title against Alvarez. This is a fantastic chance for Liam to showcase his talent in such a high profile fight. He believes, as do I, that he has the tools to beat Alvarez and stake his own claim to be the world’s best.”
