Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Beautiful punch
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
69 amateur wins, only his 10th ko. Would not have guessed that.
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
It's hard to get stoppages in amateur events, due to the type of gloves used and short bout duration- Wilder for instance only had about 5 stoppages in the ams. The BoxRec amateur records are usually incomplete and mostly include international and national level competitions, where presumably fighters would have the least amount of stoppages due to the level of opposition.
Boxrec also doesn't count RSCs (referee stops contest) as knockouts, even though they are basically the amateur equivalent of them...Khatiev would have a few more if those were added in.

Not sure about that Aliev DQ...

Torrez vs Jalolov in the SHW final - Jalolov brutally KO'd Torrez in their last meeting. Now against the odds, Torrez makes the Olympic final, to once again meet the huge scary guy who iced him in 1 round the first time. If Torrez gets revenge, make a movie of it!

Yeah Suleiman had said Torrez shouldn't have been put in a ring with Jalolov the 1st time it happened... It will def make things intriguing.
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
I don’t know who was more traumatized from their first fight, Jalolov looked stricken after striking Torrez down. Torrez looked dead.
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Yeah, I saw that too. First he was celebrating then he had a look of concern. He laid him out cold for a good while.
Also, Jalovov had turned pro before going back to the amateurs for this tournament.

Skillful Russian Albert Batyrgaziev beats USA's Duke Ragan in the featherweight gold medal final
Amateur P4P #1 Khyzniak of Ukraine beats the Filipino KO artist Marcial in the MW semis, and will meet Sousa of Brazil in the final. Sousa is a surprise finalist.
And Gal Yafai of Great Britain, brother of former world champ Kal, will fight in the flyweight gold medal final, vs a tough Filipino who beat Kosei Tanaka's bro
Torrez and Keyshawn Davis the 2 remaining men's gold medal hopes for the USA. I think Davis has looked excellent and has much better chances than Torrez does.

Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Galal Yafai manages to secure GB's lone men's gold, winning the flyweight tournament. He showed a strong, pro style, but he's almost 29 and that is super late to turn pro at his size.
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Big upset as Oleksandr Khyzniak, unbeaten for 5 years and up 2-0 in the gold medal final, was KO'd out of nowhere in the 3rd round vs Brazilian Herman Sousa
Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Keyshawn Davis loses a close fight to Cuban Andy Cruz, who is now 4-0 in their head to heads
USA's last chance at gold is Richard Torrez Jr. at SHW

Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Ya, tough one there. I am rooting for Torrez though, as it would be a great underdog story for him to make the finals against the odds, then beat the big scary, unbeaten in years guy who brutally KTFO him the last time they met. To bring home the USA's first men's gold in 17 years too...

Re: Olympic Boxing in Tokyo
Torrez put up a good effort and even won the 1st round on 3 of the cards, but then got pounded and given a standing count in the 2nd, and outboxed in the 3rd. He also had a point taken away for use of the head, which was bogus. It would've been a travesty if that had been the difference, but Jalolov won clearly even without it.
Jalolov gets a 5-0 win and takes a well deserved gold. In a tournament filled with 3-2 and 4-1 decisions, he scored three 5-0s and a stoppage to go with it.

I read he wants to fight in the amateur world championships that are being held later this year. Seems to enjoy fighting as an amateur - I wonder if the Uzbek gov pays him well for that.
