David Jimenez came into this fight as a highly regarded prospect who had already won the WBC Continental Latino American (formerly Latino) flyweight title. He was not ranked in any of the Top 15s but was listed at #24 by the WBC (who issue Top 40s) and #31 by the IBO (who post Top 100s).

Edwin Cano was not ranked; not even in the WBC's Top 40 or the IBO's Top 100. He too was an undefeated prospect but unlike Jimenez, who had unanimously outpointed fringe contender Jerson Ortiz over ten rounds, Cano had never fought in a bout scheduled for more than six rounds until facing Jimenez.
