Wakatakakage is looking really good right now. He beat 2 Ozeki and a Sekiwake already. Terunofuji is tomorrow. Let's see if he can keep it up.

I think he's going to have to win the July tournament or come in 2nd in that tournament as well as win this one. The issue with him is this is his first tournament back at Ozeki, and they have never promoted anyone to Yokozuna after their first tourney after making or returning to Ozeki.

I was a little behind on all the action. I recently got my DirecTV service cut off, and had forgot about this, but thankfully there are numerous YouTube channels that allows me to follow Sumo.

Terunofuji is doing spectacularly for the last several Tournaments, and is well on his way to winning 2 in a row. Or at the very least coming in as Runner-Up. He may well achieve Yokozuna if he's able to keep up like this. Winning 2 Yusho in a row would be the pinnacle achievement of his career thus far if he can pull it off.

I watched Day 12 of the Juryo Tournament just to keep an eye on Enho who I love watching. Interesting that he's only 4-8 so far, but he's gotten 2 wins against Makuuchi opponents.

By the way do any of you guys know how it is they determine which Juryo man will face a Top division guy and why? I assume it's because of pull outs or injuries, but you'd think it'd be one of the higher ranked Juryo guys in the Tournament, and instead it seems to just be random. I always see a handful of Juryo guys get matches in the Top division though for one reason or another.

Anyway. Fun Tournament so far. Terunofuji leading the pack after Day 12. Takakeisho right on his heels. Terunofuji's one loss came via DQ when he grabbed the top knot of his opponent, I thought he won that match too actually, but I missed the foul. On the replay I understood the decision to overturn it.

Shodai still needs that 1 more win to maintain his Ozeki ranking. Asanoyama apparently is out due to injury and may be in the same position Shodai finds himself in this time come next Tournament.

Long post there, but I've caught up on 12 Days of Sumo action in 3 days so I had a lot to say lol.

Asanoyama was caught violating COVID protocol (he visited a bar when the rikishi had been ordered to stay in) and then lied about it initially. He's going to face some type of punishment and could possibly even retire due to this. The last makuuchi rikishi this happened to was suspended for 3 tournaments and fell from the top division to the unpaid makushita division, but Asanoyama's punishment could be worse because more is expected as him as an ozeki (the counter argument is that as a big hope for Japanese yokozuna, there could be some leniency).

The juryo guys who visit makuuchi are usually highly ranked in juryo, and are brought up when they need another guy in order to match everyone up in makuuchi. It happens in the other divisions too - makushita guys will go up to juryo to round out the numbers, sandamne guys will go up to makushita, etc.

Also, one to watch for the future is Hokuseiho, one of Hakuho's prospects. He's 6'7 and is on pace to make juryo as a teenager. Started at 21-0 and is 5-1 this tournament in the top 10 of makushita.

Incidentally, there's been another scandal, as Ryuden is being reported as having gotten his mistress pregnant, pressured her into an abortion, and then unsuccessfully tried to pay her hush money. Pretty wild by sumo standards.

Btw, I'll be pissed if if that hair pull makes the difference between Terunofuji getting the yusho and not getting the yusho. Sure, the hand was in the hair, but Myogiru was already on the way down and it looked unintentional.

I think Terunofuji will still need to win or come in 2nd at the next tournament if he wins this one. This is his first tourney back at Ozeki and they have never promoted anyone to Yokozuna after 1 tournament as an Ozeki.
The fighters he's beaten aren't even household names in their own household.
