Miscellaneous Headscratchers!

Post by KSTAT124 »

Recently, the WBA, the IBF, and the WBO all issued new ratings. All.....well, see for yourself.

The WBA:

Super Flyweight: IN at #13- Leonel Barcelos (BoxRec lists Barcelos as having a 3-9 record and as having last fought in 2015. It is possible that the data BoxRec has for Barcelos is incomplete. However, BoxStat, which often shows bouts missing from BoxRec's database, also lists Barcelos with a 3-9 slate.)

The IBF:

Three fighters who have announced their retirements are included in the IBF's rankings: Koki Eto (#7 at 115), Akira Yaegashi (#7 at 112), and Yuto Takahashi (#6 at 108). They probably have an excuse for ranking Yaegashi. Most likely, they compiled their new rankings before he officially retired but they have no excuse for ranking Eto and Takahashi. Eto retired in July and Takahashi retired in April!

The WBO:

The WBO ranks Andrew Selby #8 at 118. Selby announced his retirement on June 21. Worse than that is that the WBO, in their August 2020 Asia Pacific junior middleweight rankings, have Dwight Ritchie at #15. Dwight Ritchie died on November 9, 2019 at the age of 27.

Note: the WBA realized the absurdity of ranking Barcelos as a Top 15 super flyweight and, by September 19 (*), changed the 13th, 14th, and 15th spots from 13- Barcelos, 14- Jade Bornea, and 15- Orlando Penalba to 13- Bornea, 14- Lucas Fernandez, and 15- Penalba. Interestingly enough, it was Fernandez (Lucas Emanuel Fernandez Leone) who stopped Barcelos in the latter's last bout in 2015."

Fernandez is the only fighter to have beaten current WBA "regular" champion Joshua Franco in a pro bout and may have belonged in the WBA's rankings all along. It may not be that much of a stretch to assume that the WBA originally listed Barcelos in error, having somehow mixed him up with Fernandez.

* Edit: from I have since learned, the changes were made on late September 7 or on September 8. I did not discover that the changes had been made until the 19th.
