Former New York State Athletic Commission World welterweight champion Hedgemon Lewis passed away on March 31 at the age of 74.
Lewis made his professional debut in 1966 and fought his 63rd and final pro bout in 1976. He compiled a record of 53-7-2-1 ND with 26 wins by KO.
Some of the fighters he beat were Oscar Albarado, Ernie "Indian Red" Lopez, Don Cobbs, Raul Rodriguez, Raul Soriano, Percy Pugh, Arturo Lomeli, Billy Backus (twice), Chucho Garcia, Johnny Gant, Felipe Vaca, and Rafael Rodriguez (twice). His losses- to Lopez (twice), Adolph Pruitt, Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles (twice), Armando Muniz, and John H. Stracey- and draws- with Carlos Palomino and Harold Weston, Jr.- all came against top notch competition.

A name from the past I remember well. He used to fight at the old Olympic Auditorium in downtown LA. I especially remember his fights with Ernie (Indian Red) Lopez, one of my favorite fighters as a kid.
