Robert Helenius got the TKO upset vs Kownacki Saturday

Mike Coppinger reports that Kownacki has a “done deal” in place to face former contender Robert Helenius in the main event of a March 7th PBC on FOX card at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

Dominic Breazeale, who appeared poised to share the ring with “Baby Face,” did not mince words.

The look on @akbabyface face when it comes to signing the contract to fight me. Now he wants to fight a washed up dude instead of giving the fans a heavyweight slugfest and fighting me. Go ahead and pad your record and stay safe, at some point you'll have to fight. I'll stay in the gym and will continue to look for the best fights for the fans. #TROUBLE

I can’t speak to whatever financial or promotional shenanigans brought this matchup about, but I can definitely whinge about it. Helenius (29-3, 18 KO) was briefly a thing in 2011 when he knocked out Sam Peter and took a split decision over Dereck Chisora, only to sputter out with inactivity. Johann Duhaupas blew him away in “The Nordic Nightmare’s” return to the world stage, and he’s since dropped a decision to Dillian Whyte and suffered a come-from-behind knockout loss to Gerald Washington on FS1.

He’s not, like, garbage, but he’s at or below the levels of guys Kownacki (20-0, 15 KO) already beat, like Chris Arreola, Charles Martin, and the aforementioned Washington. It’s a pointless, drama-free matchup and a waste of time for someone knocking on the door of world title contention. Hell, Kownacki is only behind Kubrat Pulev in the IBF rankings. He should not be fighting a 36-year-old who’s been consistently disappointing for eight years straight.
The fighters he's beaten aren't even household names in their own household.

Should at leadt look good. Kownacki's dtalker style and agressive flurries while walking forward will be too much for Helenius who has a shaky stamina that makes his chin vulnerable. Helenius lost a lot of weight recently. Lets see whar kind of impact that has.

Kownacki eats punches and just had a rough fight vs a washed up Arreola; previously he was sent to the hospital by Kiladze and I thought barely beat Martin (who now seems to be fighting Washington), Obviously Helenius isn't great but these seemingly weak opponents may give him more of a run than expected.

I'd think they will be cashing him out vs Wilder soon. He's done well to stay unbeaten as is and I don't think he can climb much higher than Charles Martin and still win.

Don't really see the point of this one. Helenius has pretty well been written off as yesterday's news. Guess they're wanting to keep Kownacki on the backburner.

If Fury beats Wilder, he'll almost 100% be Wilder's comeback opponent. If Wilder beats Fury. It's like 50% that he'll be next. Either way a KO loss to Wilder is in his future.

yeah probably the best reason why i keep reading the forum about once or twice a week! Joey has always been an honest warrior. Reminds me of guys like Garrido who is a road warrior and engages with hardcore boxing fans.

I think Joey can look bad but also good vs certain types of styles. I see similarities with joey and McDermott... not saying he'd win vs the recent version of Fury but he'd be problematic stylistically.

yeah but most don't know Helenius made a huge turn around recently as far as training... he got in serious shape and looks like he is back as far as durability, power, stamina...

Good stuff...
