tough to guage different eras against each other. SRR obviously has the most impressive resume IMO so he gets the nod if i have to pick someone. so many great great fighters throughout history though
"He's a fighter, I'm a fighter, if I'm better on that day, I win. That's just the way it goes. Someday, every fighter loses. Sooner or later, somebody comes along and they got your ticket. Too old, just wasn't your day, whatever the reason is. In the end, everybody gets beaten. The most you can hope for is that you stay on top a while. Be the best."

Muhammad Ali was way before my time but I watched a documentary on him the other night that had all the great heavyweights being interviewed and highlights. I have to say that it just have been so awesome to be a boxing fan in the 1970s because here were so many awesome fighters and he fought them all.

It was great to hear all the stories from all the fighters about Ali.

I think the term the "Greatest" is fitting for Ali but imo it has as much if not more to do with what he did outside the ring as in it.

For me I'm on the side of Springs Toledo and was long before his "GODS OF WAR" came out.

Its Harry Greb for me.

Ali was the self-proclaimed GOAT. That title was never actually given to him by his contemporaries.

SRR is universally recognized as the GOAT by all. Ali himself said SRR was the GOAT.

The greatest fighter in my lifetime is SRL.

Just Search Rasta's Post....
but for a start
Greb’s record is virtually unbelievable. How many fighters can claim to have a record like that of Harry Greb? He defeated 18 men who held, had held, or would hold world championships, and this at a time when there were only 8 divisions in boxing and one champion in each division. The 5 middleweight champions that Greb defeated were Mike O’Dowd, George Chip, Al McCoy, Mickey Walker, Tiger Flowers and Johnny Wilson from whom he won the title. He also defeated 4 middleweight title claimants Eddie McGoorty, Frank Mantell, Jeff Smith and Bryan Downey. Greb defeated 7 light heavyweight world champions, Mike McTigue, Jack Dillon, Battling Levinsky, Tommy Loughran, Jimmy Slattery and Maxie Rosenbloom and one future world heavyweight champion, Gene Tunney whom he fought five times.

Enjoy. Scroll to the bottom for the essay on Greb but the entire series is a great read.

I don't really think about it. I think Joe Louis and Ali were probably the best HW's of all time and would likely beat all of the others prime-for-prime.

There really is no right or wrong answer. The case could be made for Charles, Langford, Armstrong, Gans, Pep, Leonard B or even Ray all things considered. If not for Ali, Duran would have been king of the world for a decade. What about Jofre?

Will always call Ali the GOAT but cannot disagree with the man. SRR was the greatest that ever laced em up and my take makes no sense.

I voted for Robinson. As NoPropaganda wrote, even Ali said Sugar Ray was the greatest but he added he was the greatest heavyweight!

Sugar Ray Robinson reminds me of a Joe Louis/Muhammad Ali hybrid when I see him fight. The best qualities of both fighters are in his style I believe. Gotta go with the Sugar Man.

Though to me Sam Langford could just as easily be called the Greatest Fighter of all Time and I wouldn't argue with you. Langford's accomplishments will never be equaled. He beat ATG fighters from Lightweight all the way to Heavyweight.

The poll, with Robinson, leading by a good number of votes is reminiscent of the "TTR'S All-Time Top 20 plus" voting conducted in 2009 and 2010.

The results:

Here's the thread in which the voting was conducted:

http://www.the13thround.com/phpBB2/view ... 13&t=50866

I voted for Robinson then and voted for him again tonight.
