Verdejo' first fight on HBO. Hes been veey impressive but I still dont know if he can take a shot. The one thing I dont like is the high ear muffs when opponent is throwing. Skills are sick and he could be something special if he has a chin.

There's a reason for that: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

Not a particularly great record.

Verdejo's not in much better though: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

As for the card, it's got a lot of competition being on the same night as Deontay Wilder's highly anticipated fight with tested and deserving challenger Eric Molina, as well as the thrilling Robert Helenius vs. Kenneth Odeke tilt.

Molina getting a shot at the NIT heavyweight title is a joke. The only reason he got it is because he's been stopped twice in round one and has a glossy record

I can understand wanting a guaranteed win in your first voluntary defense, but this does nothing for Wilder. Haymon should have put him in with an older fighter like Tony Thompson so he could get some rounds in. Tony is old enough that Wilder should be able to take him but still be able to test him a bit and give him rounds

More than the usual opposition of a colombian fighter. Most of Colombia's fighter have puncher type of records like in brazil... but against not much. The best are singled out and cuddled at pro... same problem in Peru.

But Marriaga actually had good tests and did well in hem... he has an aggressive pace and nasty body work so it's hard to deal wtih for [lots of fighters

Marriaga is no slouch in physically. At 5'7" he is just about as tall as Walters.

Marriaga is TINY compared to Walters. You'll see when they're across from one another in the center of the ring.

I guess I'll see then. They are listed the same in height. Unless there is a typo, it says the bout is being contested for the WBA Super featherweight title. So Walters is moving up? No Walters vs Loma or Walters vs Rigo?
I don't expect Loma to move up, he isn't a big featherweight. Although the Cuban opponent he beat in the Olympics was 5'8" and had about the same reach as Walters. It was also contested at 132.

Believe it or not the weight I was fighting(sparring) at that weight when I was 17. However, I was 6'0".
I referred to myself as the Motor City Hitman, ripoff of Hearns. My cousin called me "The White Mark Breland".

Walters/Marriaga

Post by southpawstephen »

This fight is somewhat flying under the radar. For those who are not familiar with Marriaga, he is the last person to defeat Walters in the AMs. From what I have seen of him, he looks very solid as a pro and holds a record of 20-0 (18). He hasn't faced the competition that Walters has yet in the pros, but this should make for a very exciting fight. Wouldn't be surprised if this one ends up a FOTY candidate.

Really looking forward to seeing this destroyer again. It was an odd choice for Miguel to agree to step up against. Never knew about his amateur loss to him. I hope they are not resting their chances an decision on that.

I like the back story. Avenging amateur losses are always worth a watch and from the record it looks as if Marriaga has some pop. You get to see the look of confidence systematically smacked off the face of the previous victor minus the headgear...or ya get Forrest/Mosley.

Indeed. I remember Cotto planking Pinto and beating up Abdullev quite fondly.

I was thinking the same thing... It was the Abdullaev fight that made me a believer in Cotto. His versatility was on full display in that bout.

This is the best card of the week!

The old monaghan would've made it a WAR vs Zuniga but now he is a little more reserved and looking to body punch... taking steps back to not waste as much... Should still be interesting.

I like Mike Reed also on the undercard.
