- An accidental clash of heads caused a cut near Canizales' left eye in round 2.
- The cut was worsened by two more head clashes, both of which were ruled intentional. The infractions resulted in Matellon having one point deducted in round 6 and one point deducted in round 8.
- After the 8th round, referee Guillermo Perez Pineda stopped the bout on the advice of the ringside physician.
- Canizales won by the scores of 76-74, 77-73, and 77-73.
