TTR SUPERFIGHTS CHALLENGE #14- APRIL '22 SCHEDULE- Part 1

Post by KSTAT124 »

If we had the three Challenges going, I probably would have only chosen Golovkin-Murata and Spence-Ugas for the Superfights Challenge. Most of the other fights, in the past, would have been "high level" regular Challenge bouts and the women's bouts may have been included in the regular Challenge or in the Supplementary Challenge. Speaking the women's bouts, all three are of major importance. Savannah Marshall, The Ring's #1 female middleweight contender and The Ring's #10 P4P, is defending her WBO belt against a former champion Femke Hermans, The Ring's #4 contender at 160, and if Ms. Marshall wins, she'll earn a shot at Claressa Shields. Mikaela Mayer, The Ring female junior lightweight champ and The Ring's #7 P4P, defends all of her titles against another former champion Jennifer Han (The Ring #5). The third women's bout included is the world flyweight title unification bout between WBC champion Marlen Esparza, ranked #1 by The Ring, and 46-year-old WBA champion Naoko Fujioka, The Ring's #2 ranked contender. The bout is also for the vacant The Ring World female flyweight title.

You're right and they're right. Her last name is Fujioka. I copied this from a piece a paper on which I scribbled (and I do mean scribbled!) possible fights for the Superfights Challenge. I misread what I wrote, typed the wrong name (in three places no less), and didn't catch my error(s).

Thanks for pointing it out to me. (I've since made the necessary corrections.).

I made another error too. I listed Marshall-Hermans for April 9. It's actually scheduled for today.

I'm going with Marshall and hopefully I can notify the other Superfights Challenge participants in time.

49- Still undecided. Lubin's 5'9 1/2"; Fundora's 6'5 1/2". Will Lubin play Jimmy Paul to Fundora's Alvin Hayes or will Fundora do to Lubin what Jermell Charlo did to him? Or will it go the distance? Fundora has outpointed Garcia; Lubin has outpointed Gausha.

51- Do I pick a 46-year-old over a 32-year-old? She's the underdog but she's won world titles in five different weight classes. On the other hand, Esparza has been on a nice roll since her loss to Seniesa Estrada. I may regret this but I'm going with Ms. Fujioka.

SUPERFIGHT #52-

Welterweight Bout-
Errol Spence, Jr. (TTR #1, Transnational Boxing Rankings Board #1, The Ring #2; TTR #5 P4P, Transnational Boxing Rankings Board #5 P4P; The Ring #5 P4P; 28-0, 22 KOs)
TKO-10 1:44
Yordenis Ugas (TTR #3, Transnational Boxing Rankings Board #3, The Ring #3; 27-5, 12 KOs)
- Spence's IBF and WBC World welterweight titles and Ugas' WBA Super World welterweight title were on the line.
- This was Spence's first bout since his UD 12 win over Danny Garcia on December 5, 2020.
- Ugas came into this bout off his August 8, 2021 UD 12 win over Manny Pacquiao. Spence has been scheduled to fight Pacquiao but suffered a detached retina in training. Ugas took his place and upset the Filipino legend.
- Going into the 10th round, the official scores were all in Spence's favor- 88-82, 88-82, and 88-83. Scoring the bout for TTR's Main Page, I also had Spence ahead, 88-83 (having given Ugas the first and sixth rounds).
- During the 10th round, the ringside physician advised referee Laurence Cole to stop the bout because of the severe swelling around Ugas' right eye.

SUPERFIGHT #53-

Welterweight Bout-
Eimantas Stanionis (The Ring #7, TTR #13; 14-0, 1 ND, 9 KOs)
Split Dec. 12

- The bout was fought for Butaev's WBA World welterweight title.
- I scored the bout for TTR's Main Page and after 10 rounds, I had Stanionis leading by the score of 97-93.
- Referee Rafael Ramos penalized Butaev one point for holding Stanionis' head down and hitting him in round 11.
- The point deduction had no bearing on the final outcome. The official scores were 114-113 for Butaev, 116-111 for Stanionis, and 117-110 for Stanionis.
- I also had Stanionis winning by a 116-111 score.

SUPERFIGHT #54-

Lightweight Bout-
Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz (TTR #6, Transnational Boxing Rankings Board #6, The Ring #6; 23-2-1, 16 KOs)
TKO-5 1:32
Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-5, 18 KOs)
- Going into the fifth round, Cruz had already decked Gamboa three times- once in round 2, once in round 3, and once in round 4.
- In the 5th frame, Cruz rocked the former unified World featherweight champion with a combination causing Gamboa to fall into the ropes. Referee Mark Calo-oy, recognizing that the battered Gamboa would have gone down again had it not been for the ropes, stopped the bout.
