- Washington boxed very well and controlled the action through the first four rounds.
- In the fifth round, Wilder caught Washington with a chopping right followed by a left hook and Washington went down. He beat the count but after action resumed, it was evident that he was wobbly and in no condition to continue. Referee Mike Griffin wisely waved the bout off.

- The defending champion decked the game but overmatched challenger two more times in the seventh causing referee Ian John Lewis to mercifully stop the bout.
