Here is a piece from Boxing Tidbits on the Frazier/Ellis fight

Joe Frazier stops Jimmy Ellis

Joe Frazier On this day in 1970, Joe Frazier unified the heavyweight title with a 5th-round stoppage of Jimmy Ellis at Madison Square Garden.

When Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight championship for refusing induction into the U.S. military in 1967, his title was split. The WBA chose to crown its champion through a tournament, which Ellis won with a majority decision over Jerry Quarry in April of 1968. Frazier chose not participate in the tournament, and instead won the vacant New York State Athletic Commission World Heavyweight title by knocking out Buster Mathis in the 11th round in March of 1968.

While new champions were in place, the heavyweight division was still in disarray. After almost two years of separate titleholders, a unification bout was finally put together.

In the first round, Frazier began his trademark slow start. However, by the fourth round he was running at full speed and dropped Ellis twice. The WBA champion woozily returned to his corner tat the end of the fourth round. His trainer, Angelo Dundee, examined his fighter and stopped the bout before the beginning of the fifth.

For Ellis, it was his last title bout. Frazier held the belt until 1973 and cleared up the confusion in the heavyweight division by winning a 15-round decision over Ali in 1971. Frazier and Ellis met again in 1975 in what was a “last chance? bout for both fighters. This time, Frazier stopped Ellis in the ninth round.

1986- Julio Cesar Chavez Jr born

Julio César Chávez Carrasco was born on February 16th, 1986, to legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez and then-wife Amalia Carrasco. At the time, his father had already won fifty professional fights and had three successful defenses of his WBC super featherweight title.

Chávez Jr. made his pro boxing debut in September of 2003 against Jonathan Hernandez. He won by a decision, but it was a disappointment not to get the knockout victory. Two months later he made up for it by knocking out Eugene Johnson in the just a minute and a half on the undercard of his father's rematch with Willy Wise. Also on the undercard, younger brother Omar Chávez made his amateur debut in an exhibition bout.

Julito's next three bouts he also won by decision, but since then he has won all but one by knockout. In May of 2004, he once again scored a first round knockout on the undercard of his father's "Farewell to Mexico" fight against Frankie Randall. Junior has also appeared three times on the undercards of Erik Morales fights and has fought on Telefutura's Solo Boxeo.

Born On This Day

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (born Julio César Chávez Carrasco in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico)
Mexican boxer, known in the English-speaking world as Julio César Chávez Jr. The son of Legendary Boxing Champion Julio César Chávez and then-wife Amalia Carrasco. His younger brother Omar Chávez is also an undefeated prospect who fights at Welterweight. Julio is ranked 1st at Middleweight by the WBC and is the current WBC Silver Middleweight Champion.
Julio was born in the city of Culiacán,. He was born when his father held the WBC World Championship at Junior Lightweight. His face became known to boxing fans when his father would take him and his brother Omar into the ring as children, before each of Chávez Sr.'s fights. As a teenager, Chávez Jr. endured some difficult moments, including a publicized relationship between his father and actress Salma Hayek and the consequential divorce of his parents. Chávez Jr. lived in relative obscurity until he announced that he would follow in the footsteps of his father and become a boxer.
After having three amateur fights, Chavez Jr. started his professionally boxing career at only 17 years old. On September 26, 2003 at Super Featherweight (130lbs), Julio won his professional debut by outpointing Jonathan Hernandez over six rounds in Chávez Jr.'s native Culiacán, Sinaloa. Chavez jr. is signed with Bob Arum's Top Rank. Many of his fights have been held during boxing programs that have been headed by his father; he has also been featured on the undercards of many major pay-per-view fights (rare for an up-and-coming fighter, but not unexpected in his case given his father's fame). He is considerably taller than his father. Chávez Jr. set a fighting pace that was reminiscent of Chávez Sr.'s own pace when the latter was a younger man: in 2004, he fought eleven times, not having a fight only in August during that year:
Chavez, Jr. won by a split decision over Matt Vanda July 12, 2008. Scores for the fight were 97-93 and 100-90, while losing 96-95 on another card.
On June 26, 2010 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Chavez Jr. proved that if John Duddy is this era's arturo gatti, he is Ivan Robinson, by winning a unanimous decision over twelve rounds with the all blood-and-guts middleweight prospect, in one of the most exciting fights of the year. This was Chavez Jr.'s first fight with trainer Freddie Roach in his corner. Despite having only five weeks to train Chavez Jr., Freddie Roach commented on his strong work ethic, and explained that rumors of his laziness were not true. Dan Rafael of ESPN, quotes Roach as saying “He [Chavez Jr.] has good skills, has a nice pop on his punch and does everything I ask for in the ring. I am working with him to sit down on his punches, not move so much while throwing.”
Julio César Chávez Jr vs Alfonso Gomez On December 4, 2010, Alfonso Gomez was signed to get the fight he's expressed a desire for many times before, a matchup with the undefeated Chávez Jr at Middleweight(the contracted weight was 157) for Chavez Jr's WBC Silver Middleweight belt on the In Harm's Way card as the main event. However, during training for the bout Alfonso tore some ligaments in his left elbow and had to withdraw from the card, and will undergo a few months of rehab. For his part, Chavez Jr was set to fight Paweł Wolak as a replacement bout, but after adjusting the weight limit for said match to 165 lbs, Chavez Jr himself had to pull out due to the flu messing up his training and weight loss.

2008- Fernando Montiel KO 4 Martin Castillo, Las Vegas. Retains WBO Junior Bantamweight Title.

I was so excited for this match-up and, at the time, I was in the minority of the guys I posted with in picking Montiel. Castillo, even at his best, was not at the level of Montiel IMO.
