Here is a little more on the subject from thesweetscience.com:

On this day in 1943, Jake LaMotta won a 10-round decision over Sugar Ray Robinson in a non-title bout in Detroit, Michigan.

The two faced each other six times, with Robinson winning five of those contests. However, most of the bouts were very close, as LaMotta’s bull rushes perfectly complimented Robinson’s superior boxing attack.

In this bout, LaMotta relentlessly charged and Robinson was unable to keep him at bay. In the ninth round, he knocked Robinson through the ropes in what boxing fans consider the defining moment of his career. The final scorecards all read 5-4 in favor of LaMotta.

The bout was the first loss of Robinson’s amateur and 40-fight professional career. He did not lose again for another 88 fights and avenged the loss to LaMotta three weeks later with a 10-round decision.

Born On This Day

1961- Tony Baltazar (born in Los Angeles, California)
Mexican American boxer. He competes in the Lightweight division. After an amateur career where he won various titles, he turned professional in the late 1970s, and has boxed the likes of Robin Blake, former world champion Roger Mayweather, Hector Macho Camacho and Carlos Bolillo Gonzalez, the last two of which Baltazar fought for world titles. Baltazar has been a contender at the Lightweight and Jr. Welterweight divisions.
A native of La Puente, California, Baltazar now resides in Phoenix. He was one time the holder of a WBO regional title, the North American Boxing Organization Jr. Welterweight championship. His brother, Frankie Baltazar, was also a top rated contender during most of the 1980s.
But Baltazar's story goes far beyond what he has accomplished inside the boxing ring: In 1995, he and his wife had a son who developed a strange blood disease. Two years later, the disease was diagnosed and Baltazar and his family started travelling constantly to Rochester, Minnesota for treatment. In between, Baltazar organized a foundation that helps grow funds for kids with that disease. After constant improvement and fall backs, Baltazar's little son died in 2001, at the age of 6. In memory of his son, Baltazar has kept the foundation on working, and he and his helpers organize charity boxing undercards, rodeos and auctions every year.
His activities have been attended by several celebrities, such as world champion boxers George Foreman, Evander Holyfield and Carlos Palomino, as well as a varied list of Hollywood actors. In 2001, the auction charity was attended by Alice Cooper, former world boxing champion Michael Carbajal, daredevil Spanky Spangler and others.

After losing the middleweight title to Emile Griffith, Dick Tiger moved up to the light heavyweight division and, on December 16, 1966, upset defending world champion Jose Torres with a unanimous decision after 15 rounds. He defended the title against Torres on May 16, 1967 and won via a 15-round, split decision.

In between his two bouts with Torres, Tiger, on February 5, 1967, won a non-title bout in Nigeria, stopping Abraham Tomica in the 5th round.

Both Tiger and Torres have been inducted into the IBHOF and the WBHF.

1989- Darrin Van Horn W 12 Robert Hines, Atlantic City. Retains IBF World Junior Middleweight Title.

Van Horn was a millionaire before he ever turned professional due to his family. Still he became world champion in spite of a priviledged lifestyle. I imagine JCC Jr. lead a very envious lifestyle in Mexico. He made it to the world champion stage as well. He's also the better fighter.
