A YEAR AGO TODAY:

Note: the following originally appeared in the "RANKED FIGHTERS IN ACTION- November 19 through November 25" thread.

TTR RANKED FIGHTERS IN ACTION:

Saturday, November 20, 2010-

Nagoya, Aichi, Japan-

TTR #12/WBC #13 ranked bantamweight Kohei Oba returned to the super bantamweight division with an impressive 10-round, unanimous decision over TTR unranked Futa Nakagishi. Oba, now 28-1-1 with 11 KOs, won by the scores of 98-91, 98-91, and 97-92. Nakagishi slid to 17-3-1 with 9 KOs.

Dresden, Sachsen, Germany-

TTR #7 ranked super middleweight Robert Stieglitz retained the WBO title with a 12-round, unanimous decision over TTR unranked Enrique Ornelas, the WBO's #8 contender. The Russia-born champ won by three scores of 117-111. It was his third successful defense of the title he won by stopping previously undefeated defending champion Karoly Balzsay on August 22, 2009. Stieglitz, who is now 39-2 with 23 KOs, won for the eighth straight time since losing an IBF eliminator to Ornelas' brother, Librado Andrade, on March 22, 2008. Ornelas dropped to 30-7 with 20 KOs.

Nysa, Poland-

TTR #16 ranked cruiserweight Pawel Kolodziej added the vacant WBC Interim Baltic title to his colllection by knocking out 43-year-old American veteran John "Yahya" McClain at 2:48 of the third round. The WBC #5/WBA #7/IBF #8 ranked Kolodziej, whose International Boxing Council and World Boxing Federation "world" titles were not on the line, raised his record to 27-0 with 16 KOs. McClain, formerly married to Laila Ali, fell to 25-9-2 with 17 KOs.

On the undercard, recent IBF welterweight tiitle challenger Rafal Jackiewicz, TTR's #8 ranked 147-pounder, won a shutout decision (80-72 X 3) over Nicaraguan journeyman Ronny McField after eight rounds. Jackiewicz, ranked #5 by the IBF and #13 by the WBO, upped his record to 37-9-1 with 18 KOs while McField, who was much more competitive when he fought in lower weight classes, slid to 13-8-2 with one No Decision and 10 wins by knockout.

Thackerville, Oklahoma, USA-

In a war of attrition, TTR #11 ranked junior bantamweight Raul Martinez won a grueling, 12-round split decision over tough-as-nails, TTR unranked Rodrigo Guerrero. Two of the judges for this IBF title eliminator awarded the win to Martinez (IBF #3, WBA #10, WBC #25- all at 115; WBO #3 at 112; 28-1, 16 KOs) by 115-113 scores while the third judge had Guerrero (IBF #2, WBC #27; 14-3-1, 9 KOs) as the winner, 117-111.

Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA-

The much anticipated rematch between TTR #1 ranked middleweight Sergio Martinez and TTR #1 ranked super welterweight/TTR #3 ranked middleweight Paul Williams ended abruptly at 1:10 of the second round when Martinez, the defending lineal, Ring Magazine, and WBC world middleweight champion, landed a crunching left that dropped the former two-time WBO welterweight champion on his face for the full ten count. With the win, Martinez, ranked #5 in TTR's Pound-For-Pound ratings, improved to 46-2-2 with 25 KOs. Williams, #3 in TTR's P4P ratings, dropped, literally, to 39-2 with 27 KOs. He came into the fight as the WBC's #2 middleweight contender and the WBO's #1 junior middleweight contender.

Fighting on the undercard, TTR's #14 ranked heavyweight Tony Thompson repeatedly shook up TTR unranked Paul Marinaccio and stopped him at 2:02 of the fourth round. The WBC #12/IBF #15 ranked Thompson improved his record to 35-2 with 23 KOs while Marinaccio fell to 24-6-3 with 11 KOs.

In another bout on the undercard, former lineal and WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei fought for the first time after a year-long layoff. In November of 2009, his one-bout incursion into the cruiserweight division brought him the WBC title. He later voluntarily relinquished that title and retired for a brief period. Since then, Erdei, a superstar in his native Hungary, has signed with American promoter Lou DiBella. On Saturday night, he scored a one-sided, 8-round decision over Kenyan veteran Samson Onyango, winning by the scores of 79-73, 80-72, and 80-72. Now 32-0 with 17 KOs, the TTR #4 ranked Erdei, also ranked #2 by the WBO and #5 by the WBC #5, is hoping to land a bout with one of North America's leading light heavyweights. The TTR unranked Onyango slipped to 20-7 with 13 KOs.

Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico-

Former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa, TTR's #11 ranked 112-pounder, retained the WBC International flyweight title with a 12-round, unanimous decision over TTR unranked former OPBF flyweight titleholder Masafumi Okubo. The WBC #1 ranked Sosa won by the scores of 120-108, 119-109, and 118-110 and improved to 41-6 with 24 KOs. Okubo, ranked #12 by the WBC, saw his record drop to 18-4-1 with 6 KOs.

On the undercard, former WBO bantamweight champion and reigning IBO featherweight champ Jhonny Gonzalez won a non-title bout by knocking out TTR unranked journeyman Santos Marimon (13-13-1, 8 KOs) in the second round. Now ranked across the board as a featherweight- #3 by the WBC, #4 by both the WBA and the IBF, and #9 by TTR, Gonzalez pushed his record to 47-7 with his 41st career knockout victory.
