January 25 1939- Joe Louis retains the world Heavyweight title with a first round knockout of world Light-Heavyweight champion John Henry Lewis in the first round, in New York. It would be Louis's last career fight, as it was later discovered that he had been
fighting with cataracts and had been since 1936.

January 25 1932- Gorilla Jones knocks out Oddone Piazza in six rounds to win the vacant world Middleweight title, at Milwaukee

And sticking to my present Philly theme.

Image

Ring greats Bob Montgomery and Ike Williams fought the first of their two classic battles on this day in 1944. To the delight of Philly fight fans, the rivalry between the two was a bitter one. Montgomery won this first match by KO in round 12 at Philly's Convention Hall.

Three years later, still seething from his loss in the first fight, Williams exacted a brutal revenge, whipping the Philadelphia Bobcat in six nasty rounds at Municipal Stadium, taking the Lightweight crown in the process.

1950 - Joe Blackwood KO4 Billy Fox at Akron, OH (Fox's final bout)
1954 - Sonny Liston TKO6 Martin Lee at St. Louis, MO

Again Philly info from PBH

Ricardo Mayorga stops Vernon Forrest

Ricardo MayorgaOn this day in 2003, Ricardo Mayorga retained his WBA welterweight belt and won the WBC portion of that title with a third-round stoppage of Vernon Forrest in Temecula, California.

Forrest was 35-0 going into the bout and coming off of back-to-back decision victories over Sugar Shane Mosley. He was a 6-1 favorite against the wide-open Mayorga, who had won the WBA title with a fifth-round knockout of Andrew Lewis in March of 2002.

In the first round, Mayorga, throwing nothing but bombs, sent an off-balanced Forrest to the canvas. An action-packed second round followed. Forrest then came out for round three dictating the fight’s pace with his jab. Midway through the round, Mayorga nailed Forrest with a right hand that sent him into the ropes. He then put Forrest on the floor with a left hook to the chin. Forrest beat the ten-count, but referee Marty Denkin determined that he was in no condition to continue and stopped the bout.

Mayorga, always colorful, celebrated his victory by smoking a cigarette.

The two met for a rematch in July of 2003, with Mayorga winning a controversial majority decision. In his next bout, he faced IBF welterweight champion Cory Spinks and lost a close majority decision.

Following his rematch loss to Mayorga, Forrest took three years off from boxing. Since his return to the ring in 2006, he has won three straight bouts.

In his only successful title defense, on this day 1894 James J Corbett knocked out Charley Mitchell of Great Britain in three rounds.

1894- James J. Corbett KO 3 Charley Mitchell, Jacksonville, Fla. Retains World Heavyweight Title.

1915- Harry Greb ND 6 Jack Blackburn, Pittsburgh, PA. Referee: Joe Donnelly. Greb won the newspaper decision according to the Pittsburgh Post. "Greb threw a million punches, but few landed. Blackburn blocked, side-stepped, slipped, rode, and ducked. From the first to the final bell, Blackburn was the center of a cloud of gloves. But he was so elusive that not one in ten ever connected. Greb was on him all the time, and as Blackburn didn't start one-tenth the blows that Greb did, Greb must be accorded the decision. Blackburn landed some body punches, but they didn't have the steam to slow up Greb. Greb solved Blackburn's defense pretty well in the third round, after winning the first two. The fourth was even, and Blackburn had the edge in the 5th. Greb did practically all the fighting in the 6th."
