Passed Away On This Day

1998- Don Dunphy (July 5, 1908 – July 22, 1998)
Dunphy was a United States television and radio sports announcer specializing in boxing broadcasts. Dunphy was noted for his fast paced delivery and enthusiasm for the sport. It is estimated that he did "blow-by-blow" action for over 2,000 fights. The Friday Night Fights were broadcast every Friday evening from (radio and television (1939-1981) 9 P.M. to 10:45 P.M on ABC. Dunphy was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988 and had a memorable cameo appearance in the 1971 Woody Allen movie Bananas. He also called all of the fights in the 1980 United Artists film Raging Bull, which was directed by Martin Scorsese. In 1982, he won the Sam Taub Award for Excellence in Broadcasting Journalism in boxing. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
His son, Don Dunphy, Jr., was an executive producer of Eyewitness News on WABC-TV in New York City in its early years, and later became vice president of news services at ABC.

Liston's 2nd consecutive first round KO over Patterson.

1987- Rene Arredondo KO 6 Tsuyoshi Hamada, Tokyo. Regains WBC super lightweight title.

1995- Nate Miller KO 8 Orlin Norris, England. Wins WBA cruiserweight title.

1995- Nigel Benn KO 8 Vincenzo Nardiello, London. Retains WBC super middleweight title.

1995- Alimi Goitia KO 4 Hyung Chul Lee, Seoul, S. Korea. Wins WBA super flyweight title.

1999- Undefeated heavyweight contender Ike Ibeabuchi, 26, is arrested in Las Vegas on charges he sexually assaulted a women (an exotic dancer) in his hotel room.

2000- Felix (Tito) Trinidad KO 3 Mamadou Thiam, Miami. Retains WBA Super Welterweight Title.

2000- Felix Machado W 12 Julio Gamboa, Miami, FL. Wins vacant IBF Junior Bantamweight Title.

2006- Carlos Baldomir KO 9 Arturo Gatti, Atlantic City. Retains World Welterweight Title.

2006- Nobuo Nashiro KO 10 Martin Castillo, Osaka, Japan. Wins WBA Super Flyweight Title.

1991- Future heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, then fighting as Cassius Clay, won a 10-round, unanimous decision over Alonzo Johnson, Louisville, Kentucky.

2000- Ener Julio won the WBO junior welterweight title with an upset 12-round, split decision over hard-punching defending champion Randall Bailey, Miami, Florida.

2000- On the same card as Bailey-Julio, Will Grigsby won a 12-round, unanimous decision over Nelson Dieppa to win the vacant WBO junior flyweight title. However, Grigsby's post-fight urine sample tested positive for marijuana and Grigsby was stripped of his newly won title. The result of the bout was changed to a No Decision.
