Born On This Day

1964- Tom Johnson (born in Evansville, Indiana)
Johnson was a boxer in the Featherweight division.
Known as "Boom Boom" ,Johnson turned pro in 1986 and in 1991 challenged Manuel Medina for the IBF Featherweight Title, losing a technical decision. In 1993 he rematched Medina and was able to win the title with a narrow split decision victory. Johnson was able to successfully defend the title 10 times before losing the belt to the young phenom Naseem Hamed via 8th round TKO. Johnson never challenged for a major title again, and retired in 2002 after being TKO'd by Jorge Páez.

1976- Steve Cunningham (born Steven Ormain Cunningham in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Nicknamed USS Cunningham in reference to his 1994-1998 US Navy service on the aircraft carriers USS America and USS Enterprise.
As an amateur, he won the National Golden Gloves 178 lbs title in 1998.
Cunningham began his professional career in 2000 with a 19 fight winning streak including a split decision over Guillermo Jones.
On November 26, 2006, he challenged Krzysztof Włodarczyk for the Vacant IBF Cruiserweight Title but lost by a disputed split decision in front of Wlodarczyk's fans in Warsaw, Mazowieckie, Poland. Later, Cunningham challenged Wlodarczyk again in the summer of 2007. With a majority decision in his favor, Cunningham at last won the title. He stopped undefeated Marco Huck on the road.
Cunningham defended the IBF title and fought for the vacant The Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Championship against Tomasz Adamek in Newark, New Jersey, on December 11, 2008. He lost a split decision (116-110, 115-112, 112-114), in a fight that was close in spite of the fact that Cunningham was knocked down in the second, fourth, and eighth rounds.
Cunningham faced former WBC Cruiserweight Champion Wayne 'Bigtruck' Braithwaite, at the BankAtlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida on the 11th July 2009, in an IBF final eliminator that decided who will be Tomasz 'Goral' Adamek's mandatory defense later that year.
Cunningham won the fight via a twelve round unanimous decision (119-109, 117-111, 118-110)
International Boxing Federation Champion Steve Cunningham: "Dogs are truly Man's best friend. Yet some people take advantage of their loyalty by forcing them into dog fighting. It's disgusting and a heinous thing to do. It must be stopped. So join me in Knocking Out Dog Fighting."
