"You know, I woke up one morning, you know, and I realized in my life that I do not want to leave this earth like Joe Louis that died penniless, owed the government a lot of money, because there is a lot of fighters that have tax problems, Joe Louis, and numerous others and so like Bobby Chacon that walks around with a map in his pocket, two time world champion, suffering and numerous other fighters."

Testimony of Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos, at the NAAG Boxing Task Force Hearing , January 21, 1999.

AL ETTORE HALTS JERSEY JOE WALCOTT IN CAMDEN

Heavyweight veteran Al Ettore of West Philly stopped a young Jersey Joe Walcott on this day in 1936. Walcott, the famous late bloomer, was a tender 22 years of age with a pro record of 11-1 (11 KOs) when he faced seasoned pro Ettore, 51-7-2 (17 KOs). The result of the bout was an 8th round KO for the Philadelphian.

It would be another 11 years before Walcott would take his first try for the heavyweight title (and another 4 years after that before he would win it). Ettore would go on to suffer a KO loss to Joe Louis later in 1936, before going 6-9-2 in the final 2 years of his career.

Born On This Day

1962- Uriah Grant (born in St. Andrew, Jamaica)
Nicknamed "Bossman", Grant was not a force in his weight classes, but was a notable contender who briefly captured the IBF Cruiserweight Title.
A gritty fighter who made the most of his potential, Grant turned pro in 1984 as a light heavyweight and lost to Henry Tillman in his second pro fight. In 1986 he defeated Matthew Saad Muhammad but was never really able to hit a groove. He looked headed towards a journeyman status, and dropped a series of fights, including a decision to Bobby Czyz in 1990. In 1991 he lost to Frank Tate, and moved up to cruiserweight. In 1993 he landed a shot at IBF Cruiserweight Title holder Alfred Cole and lost a decision. In 1995 Grant landed a rematch with Cole and lost another decision. The next year Grant was outboxed by a young Chris Byrd over 10 rounds. Rather than give up, in 1997 Grant earned a shot at IBF Cruiserweight Title holder Adolpho Washington and won a close decision, winning his only title. The success was short lived, and Grant lost the belt in his next fight to unheralded Imamu Mayfield.
Grant had a resurgence in 2000 when he shockingly TKO'd legendary but aging Thomas Hearns in the 2nd round. It was short lived, and in 2002 Grant stepped up to heavyweight and took on Brian Nielsen and lost a decision. Grant dropped back down to cruiser, but failed to win another fight, including losses to Rydell Booker in 2003 and Eliecer Castillo in 2004. Grant announced his retirement after the bout with Castillo.

From East Side Boxing
Manny Pacquiao KO 10 Erik Morales, Las Vegas. Morales stopped for the first time in 51 contests

Jan. 21, 2006 was one of the most exciting nights in boxing history. Top Rank in association with Wynn Las Vegas promoted the one of the biggest fights of the year featuring three-time world champion Erik ‘El Terrible’ Morales (48-3, 34 KOs) from Tijuana, Mexico and two-time world titlest Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao (40-3-2, 31 KOs) from the Kibawe, Philippines in “The Battle”. The fight was broadcast live on HBO Pay Per View and millions of boxing fans caught a glimpse of the Morales fall from the top.
Last year Morales won a “riveting bout” against Pacquiao. The Jan. 21 fight was a rematch for the championship. Morales was sure that Pacquiao was not match for him, saying after the first fight, “I don’t think he’s going to learn how to do it any better than from the first time. His problem is not going forward because he is good coming forward. But his problem is going backward and that is what I will do, back up Pacquiao all night long.” I’m sure Morales was more than shocked and embarrassed when he lost the second fight..
Next to Julio Cesar Chavez, Morales is the second fighter from Mexico to win world titles in three weight divisions. This division is fortunate to have the two most powerful forces in the WBC International super featherweight division face off for the second time for pound for pound action. Pacquiao is a very fast hitter and known for being an aggressive left –handed slugger. Morales have always recognized that when he speaks of Pacquiao. A right hook with a force of speed behind it beat Morales.
Pacquiao is the first fighter to ever knock Morales out. The bruttle battle ended in the tenth round from a mad rush of punches by Pacquiao. Morales was rushed to the hospital after the fight from injuries suffered during the fight. Most of all Morales training camp wanted to make sure that Morales did not receive a concussion or serious injuries during the battle.
Many people wonder if the 29-year-old Morales will give up fighting to prevent any more losses. Others wonder will he want a rematch, considering his ego was hurt more than the bruises. When Bob Arum, Morales’ promoter, was asked if Morales would throw in the towel on boxing he said, “We have to see whether he really wants to continue. I have no idea what he will do.”
“I spoke with him briefly when he came back from the hospital. He seemed a little depressed but was fine otherwise. He has plenty of money. I just don’t know what he’s going to do.” The only issue with Morales fighting Pacquiao for a third time is his weight. He might not be able to make the 130-pound weight limit.
Boos filled the Thomas & Mack Event Center as Morales went down. The fans obviously hated the fall of the No. 1 contender for Marco Antonio Barrera’s WBC super featherweight title. That title now belongs to Manny Pacquiao. Michael Rosenthal of the Union Tribune stated, “Pacquiao’s handlers aren’t thinking titles, anyway. Money is the motivation.” A lot of people are complaining and are making excuses why Morales did not win. Why is it so hard to see a Philipino boxer be the champ? The strongest man won.

1989- Juan Coggi W 12 Harold Brazier, Vasto, Italy. Retains WBA World Super Lightweight title.

Coggi was a pretty good fighter from Argentina. He had a pretty competitive trilogy with Frankie Randall, but never got to mix it up with Whitaker or Chavez. Both would have beaten him, but it would have been nice to see him get his shot.
