In other parts of the world on January 23rd, 1967, future middleweight champion Rodrigo Valdez knocked out Julio Novella in the 2nd round in Cartagena, Colombia and future lightweight champion Ken Buchanan outpointed John McMillan in Glasgow, Scotland.

Buchanan, who won the title from a Hall of Famer, Ismael Laguna, and lost the title to another Hall of Famer, Roberto Duran, is a Hall of Famer as well- having been inducted into both the IBHOF and the WBHOF. He also beat Carlos Hernandez, Hall of Famer Carlos Ortiz, and Jim Watt, a trio of fighters who held world titles during their careers.

Valdez reigned as the WBC middleweight champion from 1974 (when he won the vacant title by stopping Bennie Briscoe) until he lost a title unification bout to Hall of Famer Carlos Monzon in 1977. Later that year, after Monzon had retired, Valdez won both the vacant WBC and WBA titles by again beating Bad Bennie, this time on points, but lost those titles to Hugo Corro in 1978.

Leroy Haynes, the once highly rated contender who dreamed of a shot at Joe Louis, lost a ten round decision to Roy Lazer in Newark, NJ on this day in 1939, signaling the end of his excellent ring career. The loss dropped his record to 40-11-2 and started his final slide into retirement. He would fight 11 more times after this bout, winning only once.

In 1936, Haynes had his best year, going 9-1-1 with 8 knockouts. The run included a pair of KOs over former Heavyweight Champion Primo Carnera. The first, held at the Philadelphia Arena, ended in round 3. They met for the second time outdoors in Brooklyn at Ebbet's Field, with Haynes winning in nine.

Haynes and Lazer would square off once again, four months after their first contest, in the same Newark ring. The result was a similar 10-round decision win for Lazer. Haynes would trudge on to the end of 1939, retire, and then return in 1941 for his final four bouts.

Born On This Day

1953- Frank Maloney
Boxing manager and promoter and United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) politician. He is most famous for managing Lennox Lewis to the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World.
He was born in Peckham, to Irish parents. He began boxing at school. In his youth he wanted to become a Catholic priest, however he did not enjoy his time at a seminary. After failing in attempts to become a jockey and a professional footballer, he became a chef. He continued boxing and began training other boxers and organising amateur contests before the age of twenty. He became a professional trainer in the late 1970s, forming a working relationship with Frank Warren.
After splitting with Warren in the 1980s, Maloney moved into management and began promoting professional fights. In 1989 he became Lennox Lewis's manager, a relationship that lasted until 2001.
Frank Maloney celebrated 25 years in boxing promotions by holding a Gala Dinner Boxing Show on St George's Day 2009. He was also voted European Promoter of the Year for 2009.
Though he is famous for leading Lennox Lewis to the top, he has also guided four other fighters to World Titles and has a string of British, European and Commonwealth Champions to his name. In 2009, he led the 'Boxing Binman' Rendall Munroe to five successive defenses of his European Super Bantamweight and this year will fight a final eliminator for the right to fight for the world title.
On 14 September 2009 he suffered a heart attack whilst watching his fighter John McDermott lose a contentious decision to Tyson Fury, the damage to his heart was discovered when admitted to hospital with shock after discovering his boxer Darren Sutherland hanged. It was reported that Maloney was not welcome at the funeral service of young Sutherland though reports circulated that his wife, Tracey, and mother, Maureen, attended.
As well as opposition to the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union, Maloney's priorities include combatting crime and reducing immigration. He also wishes to abolish the Greater London Authority and increase the powers of Mayor of London, and has proposed the legalisation of brothels in order to take prostitution off the streets. He stood in the London mayoral election, 2004, coming fourth with just under 7% of the vote. In the 2010 General Election Maloney is standing for UKIP in the East London constituency of Barking where other candidates include Labour MP Margaret Hodge and head of the British National Party, Nick Griffin.
Maloney has received criticism for his comments about lesbian and gay people. During the 2004 London mayoral election, he commented that he would not campaign in Camden because there were "too many gays". He later justified his remarks, telling the BBC "I don't want to campaign around gays...I don't think they do a lot for society...what I have a problem with is them openly flaunting their sexuality." James Davenport, chairman of Gay Conservatives called for Maloney's resignation as UKIP candidate, saying "Frank Maloney is a dangerous extremist and should resign or be sacked as UKIP's candidate for London mayor. UKIP must back or sack their homophobic candidate."
Maloney was accused of "Griffin-like racism" during the 2004 London Mayoral Elections, and was described as a "dangerous racist". His campaign manager Gary Cartwright, a National Democrats candidate and organiser prior to joining UKIP, was a regular contributor to holocaust denier David Irving's historical revisionist Focal Point website. During his 2004 election campaign Maloney addressed a meeting of the "Springbok Club" which has been described by Johann Hari in The Independent as a "racist organisation". Ken Livingstone, in response to Maloney's campaign, stated that "UKIP are the British National Party in suits." In 2010 parliamentary candidate Maloney addressed a meeting of the Swinton Circle
He has been married for over 15 years to his second wife Tracey, they have two girls and a dog called Louie. He also has a daughter from his first marriage. He supports Millwall Football Club

1963- Lupe Aquino (born Isaias Guadalupe Aquino in Chihuahua, Mexico)
Professional boxer (170 cm height) in the junior middleweight/super welterweight (154lb) division. Aquino, known as "Lupe", turned pro in 1981 and won the WBC Super Welterweight Title in 1987 with a decision over Duane Thomas. He lost the title in his first defense via a close decision to Gianfranco Rosi. In 1988 Aquino took on John David Jackson for the inaugural WBO Junior Middleweight Title. In the fight, Aquino was put down in 1st and retired after the 7th round. Aquino continued to fight until 1999 but never again challenged for a major title.

SIXTY YEARS AGO TODAY:

January 23, 1956-

Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italy-

British heavyweight contender Joey Bygraves upped his record to 30-7 by outpointing Italy's Uber Bacilieri (18-11-6) over 10 rounds.

Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, England-

Heavyweight contender Kitione Lave of Tonga improved to 27-6-2 by knocking out previously unbeaten Hans Brendemuehl (8-1-1) of Germany in the second round of a scheduled 10 round contest.

Bygraves would go 2-1 in his next three bouts (losing an eight-round decision to future world heavyweight champion and future Hall of Famer (IBHOF, WBHF) Ingemar Johansson and stopping Jack Gardner in two rounds and Marcel Limage in eight) before facing Lave for the vacant British Empire title. Lave, who had lost an eight-rounder on points to Bygraves on September 19, 1955, won his next two bouts after his victory over Brendemuehl, halting Bacilieri in four rounds and former world heavyweight title challenger Don Cockell in two.

On June 26, 1956, Bygraves and Lave met for the second time with Bygraves emerging a points winner and the new British Empire champion after 15 rounds.

They would fight once more with Bygraves again winning (PTS. 10) on September 18, 1957.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-

Heavyweight contender Mike De John (28-3) stopped Emil Brtko (17-4) in the second round of a scheduled 10-round bout.

New York, New York-

Unbeaten middleweight Rory Calhoun improved to 17-0 by winning a 10-round, unanimous decision over Jerry Luedee (18-2). The bout was held at the St. Nicholas Arena in Manhattan.

Fort Wayne, Indiana-

Middleweight Willie Troy (31-4-1) won a 10-round, split decision over future World Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Del Flanagan (76-11-2).
