FORTY-NINE YEARS AGO TODAY:

March 22, 1967-

New York, New York, USA-

At the Madison Square Garden prior to the current Madison Square Garden, the one that was located on 8th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, Muhammad Ali (29-0) retained the World heavyweight title by knocking out then #1 contender, veteran Zora Folley (74-8-4) in the 7th round of a scheduled 15 round bout.

On the undercard, future WBA World heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis (23-5) demolished Johnny "Pep" Persol (17-4-1) in the first round of a bout slated for 10.

In addition, in one of the card's 4-rounders, future World heavyweight title challenger Joe "King" Roman (13-0) won a split decision over Don Waldheim (2-2-2). During the bout, Roman won over the crowd by breaking into the "Ali Shuffle."

I was there that night. The Ali-Folley fight remains one of my favorite sports memories. Besides what I witnessed in the ring, part of what made it so special was that I met Luis Rodriguez, the former World welterweight champion, future World middleweight title challenger, and future IBHOF enshrinee. Fortunately I had read a little blurb in a newspaper the day before and I was able to congratulate him for the unanimous decision win he scored two nights earlier in Philadelphia over future World Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Bennie Briscoe.

That was a long time ago. I was 18 at the time!
