On this day in 1991, Meldrick Taylor won his second world title by taking the WBA Welterweight crown from Aaron Davis via 12-round decision at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City. Taylor, rebounding nicely from the loss of his Jr. Welterweight title to Julio Cesar Chavez the year before, used his trademark speed to again become a champion.

West Philly's Percy Bassett avenged a prior defeat to South Philadelphian Eddie Giosa with his own 10-round decision at The Met in Philadelphia, on this day in 1950. The two never broke their 1-1 tie.

Meldrick Taylor decisions Aaron Davis

Meldrick TaylorOn this day in 1991, Meldrick Taylor won the WBA welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Aaron Davis in Atlantic City.

Only eight months earlier, Taylor had lost his IBF light welterweight belt to Julio Cesar Chavez in one of the must brutal and controversial bouts in boxing history. The general consensus among boxing aficionados is that Taylor was never the same after that fight.

However, he bounced back with a decision-win over Primo Ramos in August of 1990 and then signed to fight Davis in January of 1991. Davis, then 32-0, had won the WBA belt with a knockout of Mark Breland in July of 1990. Taylor would be his first title defense.

From the opening bell, Taylor wasted no time in his attempt to disprove the notion that he was a ruined fighter. He attacked Davis with his sustained lightning-fast assault for 12 straight rounds. The final judges’ scorecards read 115-112, 116-111, and 116-111, all in favor of Taylor.

Davis retired in 2002. His only other title bout was a majority decision loss to WBA light middleweight champ Julio Cesar Vasquez in 1993. Taylor successfully defended his welterweight belt twice before losing it to Crisanto Espana via an 8th-round knockout in 1992.

FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY:

January 19, 1962-

Five fighters who held or would hold world titles were in action as were five fighters who had or would challenge for world titles.

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia-

Willi Quatuor stopped David Floyd in the 6th round of a scheduled 12-round junior lightweight bout.

(Quatuor would be knocked out in the 4th round by defending world junior welterweight champion Paul Fujii on November 16, 1967.)

Lyon, Rhone, France-

Jean Josselin, who lost to Nino Benvenuti in the 1960 Olympics, knocked out Andre Corade in the 4th round of a welterweight match slated for 6 round.

(Josselin would lose 15-round decisions to Willie Ludick on August 6, 1966 for the vacant South African version of the world welterweight title and to Curtis Cokes on November 28, 1966 for the world welterweight title.)

Rome, Lazio, Italy-

Nino Benvenuti, future IBHOF and WBHF inductee, knocked out George Aldridge in the 6th round of a scheduled 10-round middleweight contest.

(Benvenuti, who won a Gold Medal as a welterweight in the 1960 Olympics, held the world junior middleweight title from June 18, 1965 until June 25, 1966 and the world middleweight title twice- from April 17, 1967 until September 29, 1967 and from March 4, 1968 until November 7, 1970.)

Light heavyweight Giulio Rinaldi outpointed Renato Moraes over 10 rounds.

(Rinaldi had lost a 15-round decision to lineal, NYSAC, and Ring Magazine world light heavyweight champion Archie Moore on June 10, 1961. Rinaldi had previously outpointed Moore over 10 rounds in a non-title bout.)

Mario D'Agata stopped Ugo Milan in the 6th round of a scheduled 8-round bantamweight bout.

(D'Agata had held the world bantamweight title from June 29, 1956 until April 1, 1957.)

In a middleweight match, Sandro Mazzinghi outpointed Claudio Buniva over 6 rounds.

(Mazzinghi would hold the world junior middleweight title from September 7, 1963 until June 18, 1965 when he lost it to Benvenuti and from May 26, 1968 when he defeated the man who dethroned Benvenuti, Ki-Soo Kim, until November 1968 when he was stripped by both the WBA and the WBC.)

Milan, Lombardia, Italy-

Fortunato Manca won by disqualification over Fred Tiedt in the 3rd round of a scheduled 10-round welterweight bout.

(Manca would lose a 15-round decision to then defending world junior middleweight champion Mazzinghi on December 11, 1964.)

Sandro Lopopolo outpointed Bobby Ros over 8 rounds fought in the lightweight division.

(Lopopolo went on to hold the world junior welterweight title from April 29, 1966 until April 30,1967.)

Honolulu, Hawaii, USA-

In a light heavyweight bout, Carl "Bobo" Olson outpointed Artie Dixon over 10 rounds.

(Olson, who would later be inducted into both the IBHOF and the WBHF, held the world middleweight title from October 21, 1953 until December 9, 1955.)

Totowa, New Jersey, USA-

Light heavyweight Herschel Jacobs (171) outpointed middleweight Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (160) over 6 rounds avenging a prior 4-round decision loss to Carter.

(Carter would lose a 15-round decision to Joey Giardello on December 14, 1964. Unlike what was depicted in the 1999 movie "Hurricane," Giardello deserved the unanimous decision victory.)

I was a fan of both guys, but Leija is among my all-time favorites. This really wasn't a fight I was dying to see. Tszyu's career was still hot and Leija, although still proving himself a dangerous gatekeeper in the division, probably wasn't meant for 140 pounds.
