June 25th

1948 Joe Louis retains his world Heavyweight title for the twenty-fifth and final time, this time knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in round eleven of their New York rematch. Louis would retire, officially leaving the title, in 1949. His twenty five title defenses are a record for any division in boxing.

1952 Sugar Ray Robinson suffers from heat exhaustion and loses by knockout for the only time in his career, when Dr. Alexander I. Schiff orders him not to continue after round thirteen of his challenge of world Light Heavyweight champion Joey Maxim, under 104 heat degrees, in New York. Both Robinson and referee Ruby Goldstein have to be hospitalized after the bout. Goldstein had to leave the fight in round ten, being substituted by Ray Miller for the rest of the fight.

Good stuff Astor! I noticed on the pic with the tale of the tape (Louis-Walcott) it said that the weights were "unofficial" and that the official weigh-in would be at Noon on day of the fight..... Can you imagine if those rules were in place today? Guys would be fighting in weight divisions one or two above where they fight prob..... Another question is do you still put these threads on Twiiter?

Thanks!

Since it was at heavyweight i guess it didn't matter! But it would indeed be crazy if weigh-ins were at noon on the day of the fight. Fighters would probably fight at a closer weight to their natural weight though which might be better for their health but rob us from nice KOs...

Still put them on twitter and i get lots and lots of good response!

Born On This Day

1981- Ricardo Williams Jr (born in Cincinnati, OH)
Williams won a Light Welterweight Silver Medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, and turned pro in the following year and was immediately dubbed as a future star in the sport and the best fighter to come out of the 2000 games.
Williams had a stellar amateur career. His highlights include:
* 1998 United States Amateur Light welterweight champion
* 1998 National Golden Gloves Light welterweight champion.
* 1999 United States Amateur Light welterweight champion
* Represented the United States as a Light welterweight at the 2000 Sydney Olympic games, winning a silver medal. His results were:
o Defeated Henry Collins (Australia) RSC 4
o Defeated Ajose Olusegun (Nigeria) RSC 4
o Defeated Aleksandr Leonov (Russia) 17-12
o Defeated Diógenes Luna (Cuba) 42-41
o Lost to Mohamad Abdulaev (Uzbekistan) 20-27
Known as "Slicky Ricky", Williams was an extremely talented fighter with power in both fists, but quickly become known for his uninspired performances as a pro. Two years after turning pro, Williams tendency to undertrain hurt him severely, as he dropped a unanimous decision to unheralded Juan Valenzuela. The following year, fighting 11 pounds higher than when he had turned pro, Williams turned in yet another disappointing performance against journeyman Manning Galloway, and lost a split decision.
Rather than going on to win the expected title belt, in 2005 Williams had a serious run in with the law which brought any title dreams crashing down. He was sentenced to three years in prison for his part in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine shipped to Cincinnati via FedEx. This charge was a crushing blow to Cincinnati sports fans, who recently had another boxing titlist and former Olympian, Tim Austin, charged with serious crimes.
After serving 31 months of his sentence, Williams was released from prison and resumed his boxing training. In his first fight since his release, in June 2008 he stopped Sebastian Hamel after just 91 seconds of a welterweight bout. He has won three other fights since then, most recently a January 2009 victory against Doel Carrasquillo, and has announced his intention to fight as a junior welterweight for his next match
