1951: At the age of 37, Jersey Joe Walcott becomes the oldest world Heavyweight champion in boxing history, knocking out Ezzard Charles in seven rounds at Pittsburgh. Charles was making the ninth defense of his title. Walcott maintained the record for 44 years.
The fighters he's beaten aren't even household names in their own household.

"Never shall innocent blood be shed. Yet the blood of the wicked shall flow like a river. The three shall spread their blackened wings and be the vengeful striking hammer of god."

Born On This Day

1910- Midget Wolgast born (Joseph Loscalzo in Philadelphia, PA)
Wolgast was a world Flyweight boxing champion.
Wolgast's father fought professionally as Mickey Williams.
Wolgast turned pro in 1925 and was considered one of the fastest boxers of his time. Wolgast defeated Black Bill for the vacant New York State Athletic Commission world flyweight title in 1930.
Wolgast has been elected to the IBHOF and the Helms Boxing Hall of Fame.

1948- Jim Watt (born in Glasgow, Scotland)
Watt is a former Scottish boxer, who became world champion in the lightweight division when Roberto Durán left the title vacant in 1979 and the WBC had him fight Alfredo Pitalua. Watt knocked out Pitalua in twelve rounds.
Watt beat such notables as future world champion Sean O'Grady, former world champion Perico Fernandez, Charlie Nash and Howard Davis Jr.. The fight with O'Grady was particularly controversial: Watt won by a knockout in round twelve when the referee stopped the fight because of a cut suffered by O'Grady. According to the book, The Ring Boxing The 20th Century, the cut was produced by a head-butt, in which case the judges' scorecards would have been checked, and whoever was ahead given the win by a technical decision. The referee, however, declared that O' Grady's cut had been produced by a punch, therefore, Watt officially won the fight by knockout. When O'Grady won the WBA title four months later Watt was declared lightweight champion by The Ring.
Watt also fought, and lost to, Ken Buchanan. On 20 June 1981, he fought his last fight, when losing the WBC world Lightweight title to Alexis Argüello by a 15 round decision in London. Watt retired with a record of 38 wins (27 by knockout) and 8 losses (3 by knockout).
Watt is, alongside former world Middleweight champion Alan Minter, a guest dinner speaker and autograph signer, and he was given an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II. He was long-term co-commentator with Reg Gutteridge on ITV's The Big Fight Live and moved with Gutteridge to Sky Sports in 1996 when ITV withdrew from boxing coverage. As of 2010, he is still with Sky as a co-commentator and analyst.
* Jim's daughter Michelle Watt is a television presenter.
* Jim Watt made a special appearance on BBC's Still Game in August 2007.

1963- Quincy Taylor (born in Dallas, Texas)
Taylor was a professional boxer in the Middleweight (160lb) division.
Taylor, a southpaw, turned pro in 1986 and in 1994 landed a shot at WBC Middleweight Title holder Julian Jackson. Taylor scored a shocking upset TKO victory over Jackson, but lost the title in his next fight to Keith Holmes. After a two year layoff and a victory in 1998, followed by a three year layoff and a victory in 2001, Taylor retired from boxing.

1973- In Jin Chi (born Chi In-Jin in Seoul, South Korea)
Chi is a boxer in the featherweight division. He is a former World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight world champion.
Chi made his debut as a professional boxer on November 20, 1991. He challenged WBC Featherweight Title holder Erik Morales on July 28, 2001, but lost a unanimous decision. On October 18, 2003, the brawling Chi got another shot at the vacant WBC featherweight title against Michael Brodie, but came up short of the title with a draw. In the rematch the following year, he knocked out Brodie in the 7th round. After defending the title twice, he lost the belt to Takashi Koshimoto in 2006 via split decision.
Chi recaptured the WBC featherweight title with a unanimous decision over defending titlist Rudy Lopez at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul, Korea, in December 2006. Scores were 117-111, 116-112 and 116-113. Koshimoto had been defeated by Lopez in his first defense, yielding the belt to Lopez before it was regained by Chi.
On July 31, 2007, Chi announced he was vacating his title. He will instead participate in K-1 fighting.
On February 24, 2008, Chi made his debut as a K-1 fighter on the K-1 Asia MAX 2008 in Seoul. He defeated Ryuji Kajiwara by 3-0 unanimous decision on the extra rounds

1979- Alejandro Garcia (born Alejandro García Hernández in Tijuana, Mexico)
Garcia is a professional boxer in the super welterweight (154 lb) division.
Nicknamed "Terra", Garcia turned pro in 2000, winning his first 22 fights, including the WBA Light Middleweight Title by beating Santiago Samaniego in 2003. After a defense against former Olympian Rhoshii Wells, Garcia lost the belt to Travis Simms by 5th round KO. In 2005 he captured the interim WBA Light Middleweight Title by again beating Wells and defended it once before losing the belt to Jose Antonio Rivera in 2006.
