Have to say his execution and composure at grinding his opponents mentally and physically was amongst the best i've seen. Seemed like if you gave him the pocket, you were done.- the13r

He's an excellent fighter. However he falls short of being among the best 5 in any of the weight divisions he fought in, in my view. And his name will forever be linked to what I regard as possibly the worst robbery in history, which was his fight with Pernell Whitaker. Whitaker won no fewer than 10 rounds (probably won 11 withe one even) and they somehow called it a draw. I'll never forget Don King's comment after which was "I kinda thought Julio had the edge".

But JC Chavez was great. And he is highly intriguing when we daydream of fights between ATGs.

While I agree Whitaker suffered a great injustice by being denied a deserved victory against Chavez, it certainly wasn't the worst robbery in history. It wasn't even near it. Why do I sat that? Whitaker walked into the ring as the WBC world welterweight champion and he left the ring as the WBC world welterweight champion as well. Harold Johnson (vs. Willie Pastrano), Carlos Zarate (vs. Lupe Pintor), and Manny Pacquiao (vs. Timothy Bradley), among many others, were not only denied wins they had earned, they suffered the additional indignity of losing their titles as well. That's a lot worse than what happened to Whitaker.

As for Julio Cesar Chavez as an all-time great, one) he's a Hall of Famer (WBHF, IBHOF) and two) it can be argued that he's a top 5 great at 140.

Chavez is an ATG, without question. You make a good point that Whitaker left the ring a champ. But my feeling was that in a fight of that magnitude, the belts don't really matter. I think that fight will always have an asterisk next to it.
