Top 20 All-Time Great Mexican Boxers

Post by KSTAT124 »

I was conversing with jskhosa via PMs about Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Juan Manuel Marquez and decided to compile a top 15 list comprised of Mexico's greatest boxers. As you will see, the list grew to a top 20 with a sizable Honorable Mention section.

Excluding Mexican-American fighters such as Orlando Canizales (IBHOF), Michael Carbajal (IBHOF), Bobby Chacon (IBHOF, WBHOF), Albert Davila (WBHOF), Armando Muniz (WBHOF), Manuel Ortiz (IBHOF, WBHOF), Carlos Palomino (IBHOF, WBHOF), and Mando Ramos (WBHOF) and excluding Mexico-based Cuban greats such as Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles (IBHOF, WBHOF) and Sugar Ramos (IBHOF, WBHOF), my top 20 All-Time great Mexican fighters' list is as follows:

in alphabetical order:

Baby Arizmendi (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Marco Antonio Barrera (active)
Jose Becerra (WBHOF)
Miguel Canto (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Jose Luis Castillo (active)
Julio Cesar Chavez (eligible for Hall of Fame consideration in 2010)
Pipino Cuevas (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Ricardo "Finito" Lopez (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Antonio Margarito (active but under suspension)
Juan Manuel Marquez (active)
Rafael Marquez (active)
Erik Morales (unless he launches a comeback, he'll be eligible for Hall of Fame consideration in 2012)
Ruben Olivares (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Vicente Saldivar (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Salvador Sanchez (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Israel Vazquez (active)
Daniel Zaragoza (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Carlos Zarate (IBHOF, WBHOF)
Juan Zurita (WBHOF)

Honorable Mention:

Kid Azteca (WBHOF)
Rodolfo Casanova
Chucho Castillo
Miguel Angel Gonzalez
Rodolfo Gonzalez (WBHOF)
Rafael Herrera
Oscar Larios
Rafael "Bazooka" Limon
Alvaro "Yaqui" Lopez (WBHOF)
Raul "Raton" Macias (WBHOF)
Rodolfo Martinez
Jose Medel
Gaspar Ortega (WBHOF)
Raul "Jibaro" Perez
Jesus Pimentel (WBHOF)
Lupe Pintor (WBHOF)
Jose Luis Ramirez (WBHOF)
Gilberto Roman
Lauro Salas (WBHOF)
Efren "Alacran" Torres (WBHOF)
German Torres
Alfonso Zamora (WBHOF)

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Note: "Alacran" Torres almost made my top 20.

I think its an incredible list although he kinda coped out with the alphabet part  J/k. Some of the honourable mentions make the top 20 imo but a great list.

Edwin Rosario was Puerto Rican.

Jorge Paez could be another on the Honorable Mention list. I didn't include him but maybe I should have. He did have a nice run as the IBF featherweight champion and remained in contention at 130 and 135 for a good number of years.

Here are some relevant articles including the top ten and top five lists (some a bit dated) of a few contemporary boxing writers:

Some of these lists may be somewhat outdated but there's a lot of pertinent information contained in them.
