TTR talks with Ebo Elder

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview:

How did you get your start in boxing?

My dad got me started boxing at two years old.

Who were some of the notable fighters you faced as an amateur?

Ricardo Williams, Henry Bruseles , Michael Strange

What was your proudest moment in boxing?

My first Georgia State Golden Gloves Championship in 1989.

Who was the hardest punching fighter you faced?

Henry Bruseles

Who had the fastest hands?

Floyd Mayweather

(Note: Prior to his 2004 bout with Ricardo Fuentes, a bout he won by a TKO in the 6th round, Elder trained with Mayweather.)

Who are some of your favorite fighters to watch?

Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard

If you could make a dream match for yourself who would you like to face?

Juan Diaz (He backed out of fighting me for the World Title in 2005.)

What kind of music is on your ipod?

Mutemath, After Edmund, U2, Coldplay

How was your experience on The Contender?

If was a difficult time because I was away from my family for almost 8 weeks, but I realized that there was a greater plan being fulfilled, so I simply did what I had to do. Through the Contender my life, career, and destiny was ultimately changed for a much greater cause. It was my appearance on the Contender that God used to compel a church in San Diego to invite me to speak. That invite has changed my life forever. All things worked together for the good of those who love God. (Romans 8:28 )

In your life you have had a history of substance abuse, what advice do you have for those currently struggling?

My substance abuse was a result of a non existent relationship with my creator and a lack of knowledge of how or where to find fulfillment. It is through turning my life to Christ that I have overcome the need or desire for anything but Him. He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world! I find that when you put your fulfillment in things that are temporary, your fulfillment will be temporary, but when you trust in the Lord you are continually fulfilled.

How do you feel about the current controversy between Pacquiao and Mayweather in regards to the blood/urine testing?

I actually haven't payed much attention to it. I think Manny refused to allow testing, but am not sure. I know Floyd and have met Manny a couple of times and am confident that Floyd is going win the fight. I've been in the ring with him and he's just too good. In my book, he's the best fighter in the sport and arguably, of all time. I'm pretty sure Manny knows the challenge he faces and would like to have any advantage he can get legally. He may have been using some type of enhancement drug, but without testing there's not way of knowing for sure. I certainly wish him the best and look forward to what could be an incredible fight.

How would you like boxing to remember Ebo Elder?

I would like to be remembered only as a guy who desperately needed the Lord and found Him through the amazing grace of God. My boxing achievements, belts, titles, and career have been forgotten by most and in time will be forgotten by all. But only God's Kingdom will have no end. (Luke 1:33)
