Pictured: Felix "El Gemelo" Alvarado

Former world title challengers Felix Alvarado and Jesus Silvestre won significant bouts contested in the flyweight division this past weekend in very different ways. Alvarado ended matters two minutes into the first round while Silvestre was awarded a split decision victory after a hard-fought match.

Friday, August 28-

Managua, Nicaragua-

Felix Alvarado (WBO #9, IBF #10- both at 108; WBA #12, WBC #13- both at 112; 21-2, 18 KOs)
TKO-1 2:00
Guillermo Ortiz (13-9-3, 1 KO)
- Ortiz, who, earlier this year, had avenged a previous loss to Alexander Taylor and upset Juan Palacios, had won three of his four 2015 bouts.
- Alvarado, a two-time world title challenger, had stopped Taylor in his only previous 2015 ring appearance.

Saturday, August 29-

San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi, Mexico-

Jesus Silvestre (WBA #7, The Ring #10, WBC #24- all at 105; 31-6, 22 KOs)
Split Dec. 8
Mario Andrade (WBC #14 at 112; 7-6-5, 1 KO)
- This was Silvestre's first bout since his February 21, 2015 UD 12 loss to defending WBA/IBO world minimumweight (strawweight) champion Hekkie Budler.
- Andrade came into the match having compiled a 4-0-4 record in his previous eight bouts. That stretch included a draw with former WBC World minimumweight champion Oswaldo Novoa and a decision over Masayuki Kuroda.
- According to www.mrboxingpr.com, "Silvestre and Andrade were locked in constant exchanges of blows that thrilled the fans gathered at the Dome of San Luis Potosi."
- The scores were 78-74 for Silvestre, 80-72 for Andrade, and 79-73 for Silvestre.
