2016-01-18	The Champions.....or The Champions, The Contenders Passed Off As Champions, and The Non-Contenders Also Passed Off As Champions
Last Saturday night's Wilder-Szpilka WBC title match was initially billed as Brooklyn's first heavyweight title bout since James J. Jeffries knocked out James. J. Corbett in the 23rd round of a scheduled 25-rounder on May 11, 1900. But after the Glazkov-Martin bout for the vacant IBF title was added to the card, Glazkov-Martin and Wilder-Szpilka became Brooklyn's first and second world heavyweight title bouts in nearly 116 years! The bouts took place as scheduled and in attendance was none other than lineal, Ring Magazine, WBO, and IBO world heavyweight champion and WBA world heavyweight super champion Tyson Fury.

The WBC has sanctioned a bout between their #2 contender Danny Garcia and their #6 contender Robert Guerrero for their vacant "World" welterweight title.....To say the sanctioning bodies have diluted championships is an understatement. Unfortunately, it goes further than that. Not only have the sanctioning bodies dilutred championships, they've cheapened contender status as well. There are 34 top 15 welterweight contenders. "Say what?" you say.

2011-08-10	A Look at Hugo Cazares' Reign as the WBA Super Flyweight Champion
There has been harsh criticism regarding former WBO and Ring Magazine junior flyweight champion Hugo Cazares' choice of opponents since he dethroned WBA super flyweight champion Nobuo Nashiro in May 2010. Cazares has been very active as the WBA's super flyweight kingpin, defending his title four times with a fifth defense scheduled for later this month. Has he been defending against worthy challengers or has been putting his belt on the line against, as one writer termed it, "a 115 pound bum of the month club?"

2010-01-21	Remembering the Lightweight Champions of the '60s- Part I
In the entire decade of the '60s, only five men had the distinction of being the world lightweight champion and a sixth was recognized briefly as the world champ by the Michigan commission. When the decade began on January 1, 1960, Louisiana's Joe "Old Bones" Brown was universally recognized as the world lightweight champion. No one disagreed- The Ring, the New York State Athletic Commission, the European Boxing Union, and the National Boxing Association (which would be re-named the World Boxing Association in 1962) all recognized him as the champ.

2009-04-29	THE HISTORY OF THE FLYWEIGHT DIVISION SINCE JANUARY 1937- Part V
Part IV ended with the year 2006. The lineal championship still belonged to WBC champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. Vic Darchinyan held the IBF and IBO titles and Omar Narvaez was still the WBO champ. Injured WBA champion Lorenzo Parra was inactive but the WBA crowned an interim titlist before the year was over, former WBA light flyweight champion Roberto Vasquez. We start Part V with 2007, a year in which only one of the fighters who began the year as a flyweight champion was still a flyweight champion when the year ended.

In Part III, we started in January 1975 with the crowning of lineal, Ring Magazine, and WBC champion Miguel Canto and finished with 2000, the year before Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, the man who would break Canto's record for most successful defenses by a flyweight champion, won the lineal and WBC titles. We start Part IV with Wonjongkam challenging Malcolm Tunacao.

or THE HISTORY OF THE FLYWEIGHT DIVISION SINCE BENNY LYNCH UNIFIED THE TITLE The Ring lists the flyweight title as vacant while most historians recognize Japan's Daisuke Naito, the reigning WBC titlist, as the lineal champion. I'm going to attempt to trace the lineage of the flyweight title, not from the beginning of the flyweight division, but from a point where, after a long period of the title being split, there was one and only one champion. In other words, to start, I'm going to go back to twelve years before I was born.

2008-01-17	The Michigan Assassin Stanley Ketchel
Ketchel was born on September 14, 1886 to Polish immigrants in Grand Rapids Michigan. Ketchel had no amateur background but he was a street fighter and at the age of 14 had learned to survive by fighting on those streets. It has been said that at age17 he was passing by a boxing both at a fair when he was tossed a pair of gloves and was told if he lasted 3 rounds he would get a dollar in reward. Ketchel took the challenge and knocked the star of the show out with the first punch he landed on him. Ketchel took the money he had won at the fair and decided that fighting would be his only way out. Ketchel got a job at a local casino making $20 a week taking on all comers.

2008-01-16	Revisit: Tyson vs Douglas
Unbeatable? Well, going into February 11, 1990 we all thought he was. Some opponents had taken him to the final bell and claimed moral victories like "Bonecrusher" Smith had done, but in doing so he lost every round. "Iron" Mike Tyson was on a 6 fight Knockout streak. He had just defeated Carl Williams via vicious KO in the first round. Going into the James "Buster" Douglas fight Tyson looked pretty much like the answer to the Louis-Ali debate. Most boxing fans thought Tyson was gong to roll over Douglas early. What we couldn`t have known though was that we were going to see one of the best performances ever that night.

2008-01-12	Bantamweight 2008 preview
2008 promises to be a very entertaining year in one of the sports most under-appreciated divisions, the bantamweights. Already, on January 10 in Osaka, Japan, WBC champion Hozumi Hasegawa (23-2, 7 KOs) and WBA champion Wladimir Sidorenko (21-0-2, 7 KOs) fought on the same card with Hasegawa out pointing WBC #1 contender and mandatory challenger Simone Maludrottu (26-2, 10 KOs) and Sidorenko out pointing WBA #4 ranked Nobuto Ikehara (27-2, 19 KOs). This is supposed to lead to a unification bout between the two champs but Sidorenko may have to face WBA #1 contender and official challenger Anselmo Moreno (21-1-1, 8 KOs). While unification should be of the highest priority, either bout, Hasegawa-Sidorenko or Sidorenko-Moreno, is certainly worth the price of admission.
